Gestures in political speeches

Abstract:

The principle objective of the thesis is to analyse the gestures employed by two politicians, namely Barrack Obama and David Cameron, in two short video extracts of political speeches. These gestures are further examined with regard to the intention of the speaker in connection with the theory of speech acts. The theoretical part is focused on the pragmatic background of the theory of speech acts as well as on the role of hand gestures regarding nonverbal communication. The analyses of the politicians? gestures and their primary functions in relation to the theory of speech acts are observed in the practical part of the thesis.

Abstract:

Hlavním záměrem diplomové práce je ve dvou krátkých úsecích politických projevů Barracka Obamy a Davida Camerona, analyzovat jejich gesta, která jsou dále předmětem zkoumání, které bere v potaz záměr mluvčího v rámci teorie řečových aktů. Teoretická část práce se zaměřuje jak na řečové akty z pragmatického hlediska, tak na gesta rukou v neverbální komunikaci. Praktická část práce sleduje analýzu gest rukou politiků a jejich základní funkce v závislosti na teorii řečových aktů.
