Good Screenwriter Josef Neuberg. Processes of Writing and Development of Screenplay in Czech Cinematography 1919–1965

Abstract:

Práce si vytyčila za cíl skrze analýzu dlouholeté praxe profesionálního scenáristy Josefa Neuberga porozumět etablování a standardizaci scenáristiky jako autonomního filmového oboru a proměnlivé pozici scenáristy v produkčním systému, respektive ve struktuře pole českého filmu 20.–60. let. Analýza produkčního systému řeší vztah scenáristy k jiným filmovým profesím, zatímco analýza pole se zabývá konkurenčními vztahy mezi různými tvůrci scénářů. Protože scénář obvykle není jediným textem, a protože scenárista zpravidla nepracuje jako samostatný autor, zkoumám tento vztah mezi systémem, respektive polem filmové praxe a jeho aktérem na dvou rovinách analýzy: analýzy kolaborativní praxe a analýzy scénářů jako textových souborů. Pohyb scenáristy v poli, techniky kolaborativní praxe i formu scénářů určovaly historicky specifické filmově-průmyslové a kulturní normy. Tyto normy definovaly, co je to „dobrý“, tedy realizovatelný scénář a co to znamená být filmovým scenáristou.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis was to analyze the long-term practice of professional screenwriter Josef Neuberg, understand standardization of screenwriting practice as an autonomous professionalized branch and the changing position of the screenwriter in the production system, respectively in the structure of the field of Czech film industry from the 1920s to 1960s. Analysis of the production system solves the relationship of screenwriters with other film professions, while field analysis deals with competitive relationships between competing screenwriters. Since the script is usually not the only one text, and since the screenwriter does not usually work as a single author, I explore this relationship between the system, more precisely between the field of film practice and its actor on two levels of analysis: analysis of collaborative practice and analysis of scripts as text files or dossiers. The movement of screenwriter in the field, the techniques of collaborative practice and the form of scripts were determined by historically specific film-industrial and cultural norms and conventions. These norms and conventions defined what was a „good“ screenplay, and what it meant to be a screenwriter.
