Am I my brother's guardian? Cain according to Saramago: A transformation from biblical antihero into literary hero

Abstract:

The main subject of this thesis is the currency of Cain’s myth in the literature. The aim of the thesis is to map the appearance of the Cain’s biblical myth and it’s partial motives in the European literature from renaissance to postmodern era. The attention is focused mainly on the transformation of the thinking and the progressive religious independence in the 20th century, which in cas of Saramago’s last book Cain led into a strong anticlerical criticism. The thesis presents the analysis of partial motives hidden in one episodical story, which has been rewritten by various writers over the centuries. Some of them used the story only as a source of inspiration (Alighieri, Milton, Hrabal, Hesse, Tournier), others interpreted it entirely (Byron, Unamuno, Saramago). The peaces of findings of the context create the basis for the main analysis, which is the Saramago’s book itself. The contextual part alongside with the analytical part of the thesis are altogether mapping the transformation of Cain, originally a biblical antihero, into a postmodern literary hero.

Abstract:

Hlavním tématem této bakalářské práce je aktuálnost kainovského mýtu v literatuře. Práce má za cíl zmapovat objevování se kainovského biblického příběhu a jeho dílčích motivů v evropské literatuře od renesance až po posmodernismus. Zaměřuje se především na tranformaci myšlení a náboženské osamostatnění ve XX. století, což v připadě posledního díla José Saramaga Kain vyústilo v ostrou proticíkrevní kritiku. Práce představuje analýzu jednotlivých motivů skrytých v epizodním biblickém příběhu, které zpracovávali vybraní evropští spisovatelé ve svých literárních dílech po staletí, ať už se jím pouze inspirovali (Alighieri, Milton, Hrabal, Hesse, Tournier), či ho celý interpretovali (Byron, Unamuno, Saramago). Kontextuální poznatky vytvářejí základ pro hlavní analýzu, která se zabývá smotnou Saramagovo u knihou. Kontextuální část zároveň s analytickou částí společně mapují Kainovu transformaci z původně biblického antihrdiny v postmoderního hrdinu literárního.
