Academic motivation in middle adulthood

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce bylo zjistit, jakou motivaci ke studiu vysoké školy mají lidé ve střední dospělosti z pohledu sebedeterminační teorie. Dalším cílem této práce bylo prozkoumat souvislost mezi časovou perspektivou a akademickou motivací. Posledním cílem bylo zjistit, zdali existuje vztah mezi akademickou mo-tivací a osobní pohodou. Výzkumu se celkem zúčastnilo 149 osob ve věku 30-50 let. Těmito osobami byli studenti kombinované formy studia humanitních a společensko-vědních oborů. Motivace ke studiu vysoké školy byla zjišťována nástrojem Academic Motivation Scale, časová perspektiva českou zkrácenou verzí Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory a osobní pohoda českou verzí Psychological Well-Being Scale. Výsled-ky ukázaly, že respondenti mají průměrně vyšší míru vnitřní motivace oproti motivace vnější. Co se týká souvislosti mezi dimenzemi časové perspektivy a typy akademické motivace, tak bylo zformulováno sedm hypotéz. Nebyl objeven předpokládaný pozitivní vztah mezi budoucí časovou perspektivou a vnější „introji-kovanou“ a „identifikovanou“ motivací, ale zato byla objevena jejich předpokládaná pozitivní souvislost s minulou pozitivní časovou perspektivou. Budoucí negativní i přítomná fatalistická časová perspektiva pozi-tivně souvisely s amotivací. Dále byl objeven předpokládaný pozitivní vztah mezi dimenzí hédonická pří-tomnost a vnitřní motivací „zažít stimulaci“. V rámci vztahu mezi typy akademické motivace a osobní po-hody byly ověřovány dvě hypotézy. Potvrdilo se, že čím vyšší mají respondenti vnitřní motivaci, tím vyšší mají skór v dimenzi osobní růst. Předpoklad, že vnitřní motivace souvisí s celkovou psychologickou osobní pohodou, nebyl potvrzen.

Abstract:

The main goal of this thesis was to find out academic motivation of people in the middle adulthood through the lens of self-determination theory. The next aim of this study was to examine the relationship between time perspective and academic motivation. The last aim of this study was to examine the relationship between academic motivation and psychlogical well-being. The research sample consisted of 149 people with age between 30 and 50 years. They were students of humanistic and social sciences of combined form of study. Academic motivation was found out by the Academic Motivation Scale, time perspective by Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory – short version and well-being was found out by Psychologal Well-Being Scale. Results showed, that respondents have average higher intrinsic motivation than extrinsic motivation. Seven hypo-thesis were formulated according to relations between dimensions of time perspective and types of academic motivation. Anticipated relationship between future time perspective and extrinsic motivation - introjected and extrinsic motivation – identified was not confirmed. But anticipated relationship between these two ty-pes of motivation and past positive time perspective was found out. Future negative and present fatalistic time dimensions was positive related with amotivation. Lastly, the assumed relationship between present-hedonic and intrinsic motivation „to experience stimulation“ was proved. Two hypothesis related to acade-mic motivation and well-being were examined. The assumed positive relationship between intrinsic motiva-tion and personal growth was endorsed Last assumption that there is a positive relationship between intrin-sic motivation and psychological well-being, was not found out.
