Identity and construction - The writer Betty Paoli (1814-1894). A biographical study

Abstract:

This biographical study focuses on one of the most important Austrian women writers of the nineteenth century. As a lyricist, Betty Paoli (1814-1894) was a pioneer of the discourse on love from a female perspective; she was a successful novella writer and Austria's first female journalist. With her reviews on theater and art and her literary criticism, and with her essays on social issues such as girls' education and women's employment, Paoli was an important voice in the bourgeois press of the time. In order to enter the public sphere as an author and be recognised, Paoli had to create a persona and a life narrative for herself that was compatible with social norms and gender roles. This began in the 1830s with her first appearance as a poet and continued throughout her life. As an unmarried middle-class woman, Paoli created a poetic persona for herself in her poetry that located the writer's deviation from the norm between a cult of genius with masculine connotations and a deficit thesis that declared her lack of integration into the bourgeois female gender role to be a motivation for her writing. With impact on the external perception of her person, Paoli wrote late romantic, Biedermeier, and political poetry with a female lyrical I who - with different motivations - denied herself the so-called natural profession of woman and her destiny in marriage and family. After the revolution of 1848, which affected Paoli's political positioning on the one hand and the literary market on the other, a further reconstruction of her persona became necessary. The fitting of the poet with an affinity for democracy into an increasingly reactionary Habsburg-legitimist society took place through her participation in the rapidly developing bourgeois and upper-middle-class press. The poet followed the change towards a realistic style of writing and the privileging of prose with scepticism, but participated in it as a reviewer and translator, and in particular supported the prose work of Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach, Ferdinand von Saar and C. F. Meyer, establishing herself as an important literary critic, which she remained until the end of her life. In this study, Betty Paoli's life is presented and the aspect of biographical selfconstruction is analysed on the basis of her literary and journalistic work.

Abstract:

Im Zentrum dieser biographischen Studie steht eine der wichtigsten österreichischen Autorinnen des neunzehnten Jahrhunderts. Betty Paoli (Pseudonym von Barbara Anna Glück, 1814-1894) war als Lyrikerin eine Pionierin des Liebesdiskurses aus weiblicher Perspektive, erfolgreiche Novellenautorin und die erste Journalistin Österreichs. Mit ihren Theater-, Kunst- und Literaturkritiken und mit ihren Essays zu gesellschaftlichen Fragen wie der Mädchenbildung und der Erwerbstätigkeit von Frauen war Paoli eine wichtige Stimme in der bürgerlichen Presse der Zeit. Um als Autorin an die Öffentlichkeit treten zu können und anerkannt zu werden, musste Paoli für sich eine Person und eine Lebenserzählung schaffen, die mit den gesellschaftlichen Normen und den Geschlechterrollen kompatibel war. Das begann in den 1830er Jahren mit ihrem ersten Auftreten als Lyrikerin und setzte sich im Laufe ihres Lebens fort. Als unverheiratete Frau aus der Mittelschicht schuf sich Paoli in ihrer Lyrik eine poetische Persona, die die Normabweichung der Schreibenden zwischen männlich konnotiertem Geniekult und einer Defizitthese verortete, die ihre fehlende Integration in die bürgerliche weibliche Geschlechterrolle zum Schreibmovens erklärte. Mit Rückwirkung auf die Außenwahrnehmung ihrer Person verfasste Paoli spätromantische, biedermeierliche und politische Lyrik mit einem weiblichen lyrischen Ich, das sich - je unterschiedlich motiviert - dem sogenannten natürlichen Beruf der Frau und ihrer Bestimmung in Ehe und Familie versagte. Nach der Revolution von 1848, die sich einerseits auf die politische Verortung Paolis und andererseits auf den literarischen Markt auswirkte, wurde eine weitere Neukonstruktion ihrer Person notwendig. Die Einpassung der demokratieaffinen Dichterin in eine zunehmend reaktionäre habsburgisch-legitimistische Gesellschaft erfolgte über ihre Partizipation an der sich rasant entwickelnden bürgerlichen und großbürgerlichen Presse. Den Wandel hin zur realistischen Schreibweise und der Privilegierung von Prosa verfolgte die Lyrikerin mit Skepsis, nahm aber als Rezensentin und Übersetzerin daran Teil und unterstützte im Besonderen die Erzählerin Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach und die Erzähler Ferdinand von Saar und C. F. Meyer publizistisch, sich selbst als wichtige literarische Institution der Kritik etablierend, die sie bis zu ihrem Lebensende blieb. In der vorliegenden Studie wird das Leben Betty Paolis dargestellt und dabei der Aspekt der biographischen Selbstkonstruktion anhand ihres literarischen und publizistischen Werks analysiert.
