Karel Josef Beneš's Psychological Prose

Abstract:

Tato práce analyzuje po tematické stránce tři psychologické romány Karla Josefa Beneše – Uloupený život, Kouzelný dům a Setkání v Karlových Varech. První tři kapitoly nastiňují vývoj české psychologické prózy 1. pol. 20. stol. a Benešovo postavení mezi jejími představiteli. Interpretací jednotlivých děl se zabývá kapitola čtvrtá. Pátá kapitola se pak pokouší o srovnání všech tří děl, vypočítává jejich opakující se motivy a zamýšlí se nad pojetím ústředních témat všech tří textů - identity a viny. Závěrečné shrnutí komentuje názor literární kritiky na Benešovu psychologickou prózu.

Abstract:

This work analyses the thematic aspect of three Karel Josef Beneš's psychological novels. The first three chapters outline the development of Czech psychological prose in the first half of the twentieth century as well as Beneš's position among its representatives. Chapter four devotes to the interpretation of the novels analysed. Chapter five confronts the three texts, names its most frequent motives and compares the conception of the core topics – identity and guilt. The conclusion comments on the scholarly reception of Beneš's psychological writing.
