Moral values of Czech writings of master Jan Hus in the reflection of contemporary knowledge

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá morálními hodnotami Mistra Jana Husa v jeho česky psaném díle a jejich recepcí v současném bádání. První část práce je teoretická; v ní je ve stručnosti popsán historický kontext, Husova biografie, základní terminologie oboru obecné a křesťanské etiky a historický vývoj v téže oblasti. Druhá část je analýzou a interpretací morálních hodnot, ke kterým Mistr Jan vyzývá, a jejich systematizace do několika kategorií podle vlastností a vzájemných vztahů. Tuto část považuji za hlavní přínos vědeckému poznání. Následuje zkoumání současné recepce Husovy morálky odbornou veřejností a oficiálních postojů katolické a husitské církve. Potud práce ověřuje, k jakým hodnotám Jan Hus vyzývá ve svém česky psaném díle a jestli je v současnosti hodnocen jako nositel těchto hodnot. Také ověřuji otázku, jestli je toto téma dodnes živé a aktuální. Z ní pak vychází poslední didaktická kapitola, ve které zdůvodňuji význam zařazení tématu mé práce do hodin českého jazyka a literatury na středních školách. Stěžejní částí didaktické kapitoly je metodika výuky celého tématu.

Abstract:

This thesis examines the moral values expressed by Master Jan Hus in his Czech-language written work, and their reception in contemporary research. The first part of the thesis is theoretical; it briefly describes the historical context, Hus's biography, some basic terminology of general and Christian ethics, and their historical development. The second part is an analysis and interpretation of the moral values advocated by Master Jan, systematized into several categories according to their characteristics and mutual relations. I consider this part to be the main contribution of my thesis. Following on from that, I examine how Hus's morality tends to be received in the scholarly community today and what official positions the Catholic and Hussite churches are taking. The thesis aims to clarify which values Jan Hus advocated in his Czech-language written work, and whether he is currently considered to be a bearer of these values. Additionally, I ask whether this topic is still current today. This question leads to my final, didactic chapter in which I justify why this topic is suitable for inclusion in the curriculum of Czech language and literature at secondary schools. A key part of the didactic chapter is a proposed methodology for teaching the topic.
