Perception of age identity: Analysis of fashion weblogs in older age

Abstract:

This work deals with ways of clothing of individuals in older age and tries to find to what degree is age identity reflecting in ways of clothing, which are prefered by older individuals. We defined in this work as surveyed lifestyle aspect the ways of clothing, which are researched in context to the older age and age identity, informal age norms and age ordering, negative stereotypes, movements toward youth and sexuality and we are mainly concentrated on older women. Through the analysis of weblogs and comments responsive on weblogs´authors expressions we realised to what degree is age identity reflecting in ways of clothing of older individuals. It turned out that the age identity can be seen in bigger range in negative way mainly in Slovakian and Czech women in comparison with foreign countries. We found out that in society exist informal age norms and age ordering in ways of clothing of older individuals and violation of these norms is punished. Then we realised that in society exist negative stereotypes and that older women are displacemented from the sphere of sexuality and are ignored by fashion industry. The research confirmed that women are trying to look younger and they try to look younger by clothing too. Mainly women who live abroad try to deny their own age, deny informal age norms, negative stereotypes in fashion sphere in bigger range than women who live in Slovakia and Czech Republic.

Abstract:

Táto diplomová práca sa zaoberá spôsobmi obliekania sa jednotlivcov v staršom veku a snaží sa zistiť, do akej miery sa odzrkadľuje veková identita v spôsoboch obliekania sa, ktoré starší jednotlivci preferujú. V práci sme si teda vymedzili ako nami skúmaný aspekt životného štýlu spôsob obliekania sa, ktorý skúmame v súvislosti so starším vekom a vekovou identitou, neformálnymi vekovými normami a vekovým usporiadaním, negatívnymi stereotypmi, posunom k mladosti a sexualitou, pričom sa zameriavame hlavne na staršie ženy. Prostredníctvom analýzy internetových blogov a komentárov reagujúcich na vyjadrenia autorov blogov sme zistili, do akej miery sa odzrkadľuje veková identita v spôsoboch obliekania sa starších jednotlivcov. Ukázalo sa, že sa veková identita odráža vo väčšej miere v negatívnom smere najmä u starších žien žijúcich na Slovensku a v Čechách pri porovnaní so zahraničím. Zistili sme, že v spoločnosti existujú neformálne vekové normy a vekové usporiadanie v spôsoboch obliekania sa starších jednotlivcov, ktorých porušenie je sankcionované. Ďalej sme zistili, že v spoločnosti existujú negatívne stereotypy a že sú staršie ženy zo sféry sexuality spoločnosťou vytláčané a sú módnym priemyslom ignorované. Nami vykonaný výskum potvrdil, že sa ženy snažia vyzerať mladšie, čo sa snažia dosahovať aj prostredníctvom oblečenia. Hlavne ženy žijúce v zahraničí sa snažia popierať vlastný vek, odmietajú neformálne vekové normy a negatívne stereotypy v oblasti módy vo väčšej miere ako ženy žijúce na Slovensku a v Českej republike.
