Tendencies in Verb Conjugation of Present-Day German

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the tendencies in contemporary German language. The thesis is focused on the gradual tendency of strong verbs to follow the weak conjugation. The first part of the thesis aims to explain the language change - the drift in the language - in general on the basis of several lingustic theories. In the following part the contemporary German langauge and its general tendencies are described. In the next part the Geman conjugation system and its central verbal classes are presented. The process of "weakening" the verbs and its possible causes and factors are discussed in the following chapter. The practical part aims to examine the presented theories on the basis of corpus analysis of the mixed verbs which tend to follow the weak conjugation.

Abstract:

Diese Diplomarbeit beschaftigt sich mit den Entwicklungstendenzen in der deutschen Gegenwartsprache. Das zentrale Thema dieser Arbeit ist der Abbau starker Konjugation und das Phanomen des Ubertritts starker Verben zur schwachen Konjugation alias Klassenschwankung starker Verben. Im ersten Teil der Arbeit werden die grundlegenden Theorien zum Sprachwandel allgemein und zu den Entwicklungstendenzen im verbalen Bereich vorgestellt. Im praktischen Teil sollen dann die theoretischen Erlauterungen uberpruft werden. Das Ziel der Untersuchung ist festzustellen, ob der Klassenwechsel bei den ausgewahlten Verben vollzogen ist bzw. zu welcher Konjugation diese Verben tendieren.
