Comparative morphology of mandibles and gonopods of freshwater crayfish

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá vybranými aspekty funkční morfologie a systematiky raků. Blíže je zaměřena na morfologické struktury, které byly pozorovány s pomocí skenovacího elektronového mikroskopu. Impulsem pro podrobnější studium morfologie raků byly rozbory obsahu žaludků u invazního druhu raka pruhovaného, kdy se přikláníme k názoru, že raci jsou všežravci, kteří upřednostňují určité složky potravy, pokud jsou dostupné. Zajímavosti je, že rak pruhovaný konzumuje částice do velikosti 4 mm vcelku, a lze je v žaludcíh raků identifikovat (v některých případech, kdy se jedná o vodní bezobratlé) na úroveň druhu. Dále byla analyzována morfologie kusadel raků hlavních rodů severní polokoule. Vnitrodruhová variabilita incisoru kusadel byla vyšší než mezidruhová variabilita, zvláště z důvodu abraze incisoru kusadel během životního cyklu raků. Interpretace evoloučních změn na kusadlech raků je možná na úrovni vyšších taxonů (Astacidae, Cambaridae, Parastacidae, rod Cambaroides) avšak na nižších taxonomických úrovních přináší pouze omezenou informaci. Byly analyzovány druhotné pohlavní znaky raků severní polokoule z hlediska jejich funkce a morfologie. Důraz byl kladen na diverzitu pohlavních znaků, stejně tak jako na detaily tvaru samčích gonopodů a semenných schránek samic (čeledě Cambaridae). Byla využita nová metodologie pozorování semenných schránek samic a byly posány (dříve v literatuře nepublikované) dentikulované struktury na gonopodech sexuálně aktivních samců, u někteých druhů rodu Procambarus. Byla potvrzena identita raka mramorovaného Procambarus fallax f. virginalis na nové lokalitě v Itálii. Pozornost byla rovněž zaměřena na fylogenetickou pozici rodu Cambaroides, kdy přinášíme doklady toho, že tento taxonomicky kontroverzní rod reprezentuje pozici na úrovni nové čeledě (mimo aktuální čeledě raků severní polokoule Astacidae a Cambaridae).

Abstract:

The thesis deals with selected aspects of functional morphology and systematics of freshwater crayfish, with attention focused to morphological structures examined by means of the Scanning Electron Microscopy. The stomach content analyses in a series of invasive crayfish species (in the Czech Republic), Orconectes limosus, support the opinion that, in general, crayfish are omnivores occasionally consuming preferred food items. We noted, that O. limous specimens are able to consume whole food particles (up to 4 mm in size), and some of the soft-bodied animals dissected from their stomach can be detected to the lower taxonomic units. The morphology of crayfish mandibles of the main Holarctic crayfish was analysed. The intraspecific variability of the incisor process of mandibles is higher than its interspecific variability, mainly due to extensive abrasion of its incisor ridge during intermoult life stage, while some correlations with phylogenetic position is indicated from the molar fields on the mandibles. We pointed to the fact, that interpretation of evolutionary changes in mandibles are indicated mainly on the level of higher taxa (Astacidae, Cambaridae, Parastacidae, the genus Cambaroides) but on the lower level the mandibles provide usually only limited phylogenetic information. The secondary sexual characters of crayfish were analysed for their functional and misroscopic morphology. The general diversity of secondary sexual characters, as well as details of the shape of male gonopods and female annulus ventralis (Cambaridae) in selected species of crayfish of the Northern Hemisphere were highlighted. We closely delineated remarkable interspecific and intraspecific differences in the shape of male gonopods and female sperm receptacles. A new methodology to vizualize seminal pockets of the receptacles was developed, and previously undescribed fine denticulate structures on the gonopods of sexually active males were discovered in several species of the genus Procambarus. The identity of the parhenogenetic marbled crayfish Procambarus fallax f. virginalis was confirmed by morphology and DNA comparison in a newly discovered locality of this invasive species in Italy. The controversial phylogenetic position of the crayfish genus Cambaroides is discused. We present evidences for that the genus Cambaroides represents a separate position as a new family, out of the two actual Holarctic crayfish families Astacidae and Cambaridae.
