Boredom under the school desk

Abstract:

Tématem této diplomové práce je nuda studentů na střední škole. Toto téma bylo zkoumáno prostřednictvím analýzy narace, tedy vyprávění třinácti studentů různých typů středních škol. Práce z počátku vymezuje fenomén nudy, přičemž samotné slovo nuda je v běžné společnosti nadužíváno a zpravidla označuje to, co je člověku lhostejné. Dále práce rozebírá příčiny vzniku nudy ve škole, což jsou například absence motivace, komunikační problémy, nevhodná volba vyučovací metody apod. V neposlední řadě je zde popsáno také několik skupin projevů nudy, které se zdaleka nevyskytují jen ve škole, ale i v běžném životě. Diplomová práce je orientována kvalitativně a interpretována prostřednictvím analýzy narace. Narace studentů byly analyzovány postupně hned několika možnými technikami narativní analýzy. Konkrétně strukturní analýzou dle W. Labova, dále přiřazováním narativů k archetypálním žánrům dle N. Frye a konečně pomocí metody podrobného čtení (též známé jako close reading), při které jsem uplatnila vlastní podpůrnou metodu analýzy dat, kódovací tabulku. Cílem této práce je podrobně popsat situaci nudy ve škole a zjistit tak, proč se studenti nudí, jak se jejich nuda projevuje a jaký na ně má vliv.

Abstract:

The topic of this thesis is boredom of students in high school. This topic is being studied through the analysis of narrative, specifically narrative of thirteen students from different types of secondary schools. Thesis tries to define the phenomenon of boredom in its beginning, while the word boredom is being overused in ordinary society and usually it refers to something to what person is indifferent. The thesis also analyzes the causes of boredom in school, which include lack of motivation, communication problems, inappropriate choice of teaching methods, etc. Last but not least, thesis describes several signs of boredom, which occur not only in school but also in everyday life. The thesis is focused qualitatively and is interpreted through analysis of narratives. Narrations of students were analyzed by several possible techniques of narrative analysis. Specifically, structural analysis by W. Lab's, as well as assigning the archetypal narrative genres by N. Frye and finally using the method known as a close reading, during which I also used my own supporting method of data analysis, a kind of coding table. The aim of this thesis is to describe in detail the situation of boredom at school and find out why students get bored, in what forms does it show and what kind of effect boredom has on them.
