Contraception and abortion in socialist Czechoslovakia. Comparing the 1950s and the 1970s

Abstract:

Diplomová práce má dvě hlavní části. První část se zaměřuje na možnosti prevence žen před neplánovaným těhotenstvím za socialismu v Československu. Tato část se soustředí především na to, jaké byly antikoncepční možnosti pro ženy v dané době. Analýza rozhovorů se zaměřuje na úskalí, kterým ženy čelily, když chtěly užívat preventivní antikoncepční metody v každodenním partnerském soužití. Druhá část diplomové práce se zabývá důsledky neúspěšné nebo nedostatečné prevence při sexuálním aktu mezi partnery, tedy způsoby řešení neplánovaného těhotenství. Výzkum se zaměřuje nejen na myšlenkové pochody a pocity jednotlivých žen, ale také na praktické kroky, které musely ženy provést, aby vyřešily svoje neplánované těhotenství. Tato část se dotýká i tématu potratových komisí, které v dané době fungovaly jako kontrolní mechanismus režimu. Ten díky nim získával přehled o reprodukci obyvatelstva, ale zároveň i moc nad těly žen a jejich schopností reprodukce. Klíčovým aspektem diplomové práce je komparace dvou konkrétních období, závěru 50. a konce 70. let. Tyto časové úseky jsou podrobeny konkrétnější analýze, jelikož jsem předpokládala nalezení odlišných faktů.

Abstract:

The thesis has two main parts, where the first part is focused on the possibility of prevention from unwanted pregnancy during socialistic regime in Czechoslovakia. This part concerns mostly the contraceptive methods available for women in this period. The analysis emphasizes concrete situations of particular women, who had to overcome many obstacles to implement preventive methods and contraception into their everyday partnership live. The second part engages the consequences of unsuccessful or insufficient prevention during sexual intercourse. In other words, this part scrutinizes chosen women’s manners of dealing with unwanted pregnancy. Thus I analyse not only their feelings and thoughts but also the concrete steps they made to solve this situation, which meant in that period either to continue the pregnancy or to ask the medical or abortion committee for an interruption. This part concerns also the topic of abortion committees, which in this period functioned as controlling mechanism so that the regime has overview over the reproduction of its citizens and at the same time to supervise women’s body, which has the capability to reproduce. The crucial aspect of the thesis is the comparison of two concrete periods, the end of 1950’s and 1970’s. I presume that these two periods are distinct in some way.
