Raymond Carver's Reflection of Everyday Life in Short Fiction

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá analýzou vybraných povídek amerického autora 2. pol. 20. století (1938 - 1988) Raymonda Carvera. Carver byl vnímán současníky a kritikou jako těžko zařaditelný a z řady vybočující autor. Pro literární rozbor bylo vybráno šest povídek, z jeho sbírky Cathedral (1983), které představují vzorek reprezentující jeho dílo. Jedná se o povídky Feathers, Chef's House, Vitamins, Careful, Where I'm Calling from a Fever. Práce je zaměřena na dvě z klíčových témat, kterými se Carver ve svých povídkách opakovaně zabývá, na téma ztráty a téma naděje. Carver ve svých povídkách zachycuje triviální situace z každodenního života, ve kterých implicitně odhaluje skutečný, často tragický stav věcí. Postavy v jeho povídkách vyjadřují své pocity především chováním a gesty, proto i témata ztráty, následného smutku a v některých případech naděje jsou v jeho díle pouze naznačena. Práce se pokusí odhalit, jakým způsobem Carver právě tato témata ve vybraných povídkách uchopil a zpracoval.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis has its center in analysis of selected short stories by Raymond Carver, American writer of the second half of the 20th century (1938 - 1988). Carver was perceived by the contemporary writers and critics as a difficult to classify and out of the mainstream author. For literary analysis six short stories from his collection Cathedral (1983) were chosen as they are considered to be a representative sample of his work. The selected stories are: Feathers, Chef's House, Vitamins, Careful, Where I'm Calling from and Fever. This thesis concentrates on two of his crucial themes, the theme of loss and the theme of hope. Carver captures in his short stories trivial situations from everyday life and he implicitly reveals the real and often tragic state of affairs in them. The characters in his short fiction voice their feelings through their behavior and gestures. Therefore, the themes of loss, the theme of subsequent grief and sometimes the theme of hope are in his work often only implied. The thesis tries to reveal how Carver grasped and worked with these themes in the selected short stories.
