"The White Hotel": A Case Study (in Translation)

Abstract:

Závěrečnou práci tvoří dvě vzájemně odlišné části – český překlad (z něhož jsou uvedeny úryvky v příloze „Appendix B“) knihy The White Hotel, postmoderního románu D. M. Thomase z roku 1981, a případová studie, která se zabývá podstatnými otázkami příslušného překladatelského procesu, včetně rozboru stylistických a intertextuálních charakteristik zmíněné knihy, diskurzivních rámců, do nichž byla zasazena v původním kulturním kontextu, a možností odpovídajícího převodu její diskurzivní a stylistické hybridnosti v kontextu cílového (tj. českého) jazyka a kultury.

Abstract:

The thesis comprises two distinct parts – a Czech translation (excerpts of which are given in “Appendix B”) of The White Hotel, a 1981 British postmodern novel by D. M. Thomas, and a case study commenting on the issues relevant to the translation process, including discussion of the book’s stylistic and intertextual properties, of the discursive frameworks that it engaged with in its original cultural setting, and of the possibilities for adequately rendering its discursive and stylistic hybridity within the context of the target (i.e. Czech) language and culture.
