Abstract:

Ústředním zájmem předkládané diplomové práce je prozkoumat možný vztah mezi hudebním nadáním a schopností studentů angličtiny osvojit si její výslovnost. Na začátku teoretické části je představen zvukový systém variety angličtiny zvané RP (received pronunciation). Je zde popsána artikulace jednotlivých vokalických a konsonantických hlásek, některé významné suprasegmentální jevy a aspekty souvislé řeči. Druhá kapitola srovnává systém angličtiny se zvukovým systémem spisovné češtiny a pojednává o překážkách plynoucích z rozdílů obou jazyků, se kterými se potýkají čeští studenti angličtiny při osvojování si její výslovnosti. Třetí kapitola se zamýšlí nad vztahem výslovnosti a hudebního talentu a prezentuje výzkumy a jejich výsledky v této oblasti jak z doby dávnější, tak i průzkumy nedávné a současné. Praktickou část diplomové práce tvoří průzkum, jehož se účastnilo deset českých rodilých mluvčích – studentů angličtiny. Ve čtvrté kapitole je zkoumáno jejich hudební nadání ve vztahu k výslovnosti s cílem odhalit vzájemné souvislosti mezi nimi. Výsledky jsou prezentovány v páté kapitole a kapitola šestá pojednává o faktorech souvisejících s nedostatky provedeného výzkumu, které mohly tyto výsledky ovlivnit, a navrhuje možná vylepšení pro výzkumy příští.

Abstract:

The main concern of the thesis presented is to explore possible relationship between musical aptitude and pronunciation skills of English as a foreign language. At the beginning of the theoretical section the sound system of RP is introduced. Individual vowel and consonantal sounds are described from the point of their articulation and the most significant suprasegmental features and aspects of connected speech are presented there. The second chapter deals with comparison of the RP and standard Czech sound systems and the constraints – resulting from the differences of the two languages – Czech native speakers encounter in the process of English pronunciation acquisition. The relationship between musical aptitude and foreign language pronunciation is discussed in the last chapter of the theoretical section. It shows the past and recent research conducted in that field and introduces its results. In the research presented in the practical section of the thesis musical aptitudes and pronunciation skills of ten native speakers of Czech – students of English – are examined and compared to investigate possible correlations between musical abilities and pronunciation performance. The results are summarised in the fifth chapter and in the sixth chapter limitations of the research are discussed and suggestion for further research introduced.
