Comparative Analysis of the Character of Don Juan in 20th Century Belgian Drama

Abstract:

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to analyze the image of the Spanish myth of Don Juan in the 20th century Belgian drama. The image of this subject widely used not only in Belgian literature is based on four works which, due to temporal variance between their publications, cover the entire 20th century and all the periods of Belgian theatre history: "Don Juan" by Michel de Ghelderode, "Le Burlador" by Suzanne Lilar, "La Nuit de Valognes" by Éric-Emmanuel Schmitt, and "Ariane et Don Juan ou Le Désastre" by Claire Lejeune. The theoretical part of this thesis explains key terms, analyses typical elements of the original myth written by Tirso de Molina, and clarifies what makes this Spanish myth immortal and why it is so present in Belgian literature. The analytical part primarily focuses on the analysis of the plot and setting of each play, then on the characterization of Don Juan, the traditional elements of the myth, Don Juan's past, his attitude to women, love, sex and marriage, and his future life. All the aforementioned aspects are analysed not only within the selected Belgian works but also compared with the original Spanish text. Finally, the thesis focuses on the influence of the 20th century Belgium on the image of this famous mythic seducer.

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce je analyzovat podobu španělského mýtu Don Juana ve 20. století v belgické divadelní literatuře. Obraz tohoto hojně využívaného námětu nejen v belgické literární tvorbě vychází z děl pokrývajících díky časovému rozdílu mezi jejich vydáními celé 20. století a všechna období historie belgického divadla: "Don Juan" od Michel de Ghelderoda, "Le Burlador" od Suzanne Lilar, "La Nuit de Valognes" od Éric-Emmanuel Schmitta a "Ariane et Don Juan ou Le Désastre" od Claire Lejeune. Teoretická část práce se věnuje vysvětlení klíčových pojmů, rozebírá charakteristické prvky původního mýtu z pera Tirso de Moliny a objasňuje důvody, pro které je tento španělský mýtus nesmrtelný a natolik přítomný v belgické literární tvorbě. Analytická část se nejdříve zaměřuje na rozbor zápletky a prostředí děje, poté se věnuje analýze charakteristiky postavy Don Juana, tradičním elementům mýtu, minulosti sevillského svůdce, jeho vztahu k ženám, lásce, sexu a svatbě, a jeho budoucnosti. Všechny zmíněné kategorie jsou analyzovány nejen v rámci děl korpusu, ale rovněž porovnávány s původním španělským mýtem. Nakonec se práce zaměřuje na vliv místa a doby vzniku divadelních her, tedy Belgie 20. století, na podobu tohoto proslulého mytického svůdníka.
