An Analysis of Relations in the Specific Groups of Idioms Chengyu Containing Two Numbers

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se věnuje problematice čínských čtyřznakových idiomů chéngyǔ, které obsahují právě dvě číslovky. Za využití slovníku čínských idiomů Xīnhuá Chéngyǔ Dà Cídiǎn 新华成语大词典byl vytvořen korpus čítající 683 idiomů právě se dvěma číslovkami, který byl následně podroben rozboru. Práce se tak snaží odpovědět na otázku, jak užití specifických kombinací číslovek ovlivňuje celkový význam dané skupiny idiomů chéngyǔ. Nejdříve jsou tyto čtyřznakové idiomy popsány jakožto východisko této práce. Hlavní část je pak členěna do devíti oddílů, ve kterých jsou postupně analyzovány kombinace číslovek „jedna“ (yī 一), „dvě“ (èr 二či liǎng 两), „tři“ (sān 三), „čtyři“ (sì 四), „pět“ (wǔ 五), „šest“ (liù 六), „sedm“ (qī 七), „osm“ (bā 八), „devět“ (jiǔ 九), „deset“ (shí 十), „sto“ (bǎi 百), „tisíc“ (qiān 千) a „deset tisíc“ (wàn 万) a jejich vlivy na celkový význam idiomu.

Abstract:

This Bachelor’s thesis is focused on Chinese four-character idioms called chéngyǔ containing exactly two numerals. The dictionary od Chinese idioms Xīnhuá Chéngyǔ Dà Cídiǎn 新华成语大词典 was used to create corpus comprising 683 idioms with exactly two numerals which was analysed. This thesis tries to answer the question how the specific combinations of numerals affect overall meaning of the given group of idioms chéngyǔ. In the first part, these four-character idioms are described as a theoretical base for this work. The main part is divided into nine sections where the combinations of numerals ‘one’ (yī 一), ‘two’ (èr 二or liǎng 两), ‘three’ (sān 三), ‘four’ (sì 四), ‘five’ (wǔ 五), ‘six’ (liù 六), ‘seven’ (qī 七), ‘eight’ (bā 八), ‘nine’ (jiǔ 九), ‘ten’ (shí 十), ‘hundred’ (bǎi 百), ‘thousand’ (qiān 千) and ‘ten thousand’ (wàn 万) and their impact on the overall meaning of the idiom are successively analysed.
