The influence of anonymity, deindividuation and group norms on the amount of aggression expressed in comments on Facebook

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá vlivem anonymity, deindividuace a skupinové normy na míru vyjadřované agrese v komentářích na sociální síti Facebook. Opírá se zejména o východiska SIDE modelu, který předpokládá, že v situaci s méně individuálními informacemi o účastnících jsou jednotliví účastníci více citliví ke skupinové identitě, a vnímají se pak spíše jako reprezentanti sociální skupiny, než jako jednotlivci. To vede také k větší vazbě na skupinové normy a standardy. Cílem studie je ověřit výše zmíněné předpoklady v prostředí diskuzí na sociální síti Facebook. Do analýzy je zahrnut také možný normativní vliv administrátorů Facebookových stránek. Studie byla založena na kvantitativní analýze dat pocházejících z 1080 komentářů publikovaných pod 54 různými příspěvky na 9 různých Facebookových stránkách. U komentářů byla zjišťována úroveň anonymity uživatele, míra deindividuace a úroveň vyjadřované verbální agrese a negativní atmosféry. Úroveň vyjadřované verbální agrese a negativní atmosféry byla určována také u příspěvků. Bylo zjištěno, že vyšší míra anonymity uživatele souvisí s vyšší mírou verbální agrese a negativní atmosféry vyjadřované v komentářích. Zároveň bylo zjištěno, že deindividuace vede k větší verbální agresivitě a negativnější atmosféře komentářů. Na základě teorie bylo očekáváno, že vliv anonymity na verbální agresi a negativní atmosféru komentáře bude vyšší, dojde-li k deindividuaci, výzkum ale ukázal opačný vztah. Současně bylo zjištěno, že vyšší míra negativní atmosféry v komentářích souvisí s vyšší mírou vyjadřované verbální agrese a negativní atmosféry v příspěvku. Dále vyšší míra verbální agrese komentáře souvisí s vyšší mírou negativní atmosféry příspěvku. Vztah mezi verbální agresí příspěvku a verbální agresí komentáře se však nepotvrdil.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on the influence of anonymity, deindividuation and group norms on the amount of aggression expressed in comments on the social network Facebook. It is based on the theoretical framework of the Side model, which expects that in the situation with less personalized information about participants, these participants are more susceptible to group identity. Therefore, they see themselves as representants of a social group rather than as individuals. This leads to bigger acceptance of group norms and standards. The aim of this study is to verify assumptions mentioned above in the environment of the social network Facebook. Possible normative influence of administrators of the examined Facebook pages was included into the analysis. Quantitative research was conducted on 1080 comments under 54 Facebook posts from 9 different Facebook pages. Anonymity, deindividuation and the amount of expressed negative atmosphere and verbal aggression were examined in the comments. The amount of expressed negative atmosphere and verbal aggression were also investigated in Facebook posts. Comments from users utilizing more methods of anonymization were found to be expressing more verbal aggression and more negative atmosphere than comments from less anonymous users. It was also found that comments with more verbal aggression and more negative atmosphere were written by users under the influence of deindividuation. In accordance with the theory, it was expected that the influence of anonymity on verbal agression and negative atmosphere of the comment will be higher under the influence of deindividuation Nevertheless, the research found an inverse relationship. Furthermore, the research proved a positive relationship between the amount of negative atmosphere and verbal aggression expressed in the comments and negative atmosphere expressed in the Facebook posts. The negative atmosphere of the Facebook posts is also positively related to the negative atmosphere of the comments. Contrary to expectations, the relationship between verbal aggression in Facebook posts and verbal aggression expressed in the comments was not found.
