Private military companies - what they are and what kind of role they play in the war in Iraq

Abstract:

The purpose of this bachelor thesis is to outline the current situation of the American Private Military Companies (PMCs) and to describe their origin along with the activities carried out in the war zones. The first part mentions the history of profession of hired soldiers (mercenaries) and deals with the issue of the origin of PMC, with the influence of the Cold War on the military industry and describes few examples of PMCs? involvement and their dominance. As the War in Iraq represents a decisive factor in the boom of PMCs, the second part of the thesis focuses on this conflict, on looting, and insurgents that forced the U.S. government to strengthen its position in the country. Crucial moments in the development of these companies are mentioned, their consequences and the relevance for the U.S. occupation. At the end of the thesis, the future of PMCs is outlined.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá současným postavením amerických soukromých vojenských společností, nastiňuje jejich vznik a aktivity ve válečných zónách. První část práce se zaměřuje na historii profese žoldáků a okolnosti vzniku soukromých vojenských společností. V úvodu autor také zmiňuje Studenou válku (a její vliv na dané odvětví vojenského průmyslu) a přináší příklady některých konfliktů, v nichž vojenské společnosti sehrály hlavní roli ve vývoji událostí. Největší zlom pro tyto společnosti ovšem představuje válka v Iráku. Druhá část práce tedy pojednává o válce v Iráku, rabování a povstaleckých útocích, které přiměly americkou vládu posílit svou pozici v zemi. Práce také zmiňuje klíčové momenty pro soukromé vojenské společnosti, jejich dopad a význam pro americkou okupaci a v neposlední řadě také budoucnost těchto společností.
