Gender stereotypes in the preschool age: maping and experimental interference

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce zkoumá genderové stereotypy u dětí předškolního věku a jejich možné ovlivnění. Výzkumný soubor je tvořen dětmi ze dvou mateřských škol (n = 32). V jedné z nich byl proveden program na zmírnění genderových stereotypů, zatímco v druhé mateřské škole byl tento program vynechán a měla tedy roli porovnávací skupiny. Jednalo se o kvaziexperimentální výzkum, při kterém proběhly celkově tři měření v následujícím pořadí: pre-test, program (2 dny), bezprostřední post-test, latence (6 týdnů) a oddálený post-test. Data byla získávána pomocí strukturovaného rozhovoru a metody třídění karet. Do výzkumu byli zahrnuti i rodiče dětí (n = 23), kteří byli požádáni o vyplnění našeho dotazníku pro účely ověření vztahu mezi mírou genderových stereotypů u rodičů a jejich dětí. V naší práci jsme se zaměřovali na pět hlavních oblastí: barvy, hračky, domácí práce, zaměstnání a vzhled. Z výsledků je patrné, že genderové stereotypy u předškolních dětí opravdu existují, především v oblasti barev a hraček. Ačkoliv jsme předpokládali, že po provedeném programu dojde ke snížení genderových stereotypů a po období latence dojde k opětovnému nárůstu, ke statisticky významným změnám mezi měřeními nedošlo. Nebyl potvrzen ani vztah mezi mírou genderových stereotypů u rodičů a dětí, byly však nalezeny signifikantní rozdíly, kdy rodiče vykazovali nižší míru genderových stereotypů. Nebyly zjištěny ani genderové rozdíly mezi dětmi.

Abstract:

This thesis examines gender stereotypes of preschool children and the possibility of influencing. The research group consists of children from two kindergartens (n = 32). We realized program to the reduction of gender stereotypes in one kindergarten, while the program was omitted in the second one thus has role of the comparative group. We used quasi-experimental design during that was realized three measures in the following order: pretest, the program (2 days), instant post-test, latency (6 weeks) and delayed post-test. Data was acquired by structured interview and card-sorting method. We also involved children’s parents (n = 23), who was asked for completing our questionnaire to discover relationship between the rate of gender stereotypes of children and their parents. We focused on five main areas: colors, toys, household, professions, and appearance. The results show that gender stereotypes at preschool children really exists, particularly in the case of colors and toys. Although we predicted that rate of gender stereotypes will decrease after realized program and they will increase again after the period of latency, there were no statistically significant changes between measures. The relationship between children’s and parents’ rate of gender stereotypes wasn’t confirmed either, but we found out significant differences, where parents showed the lower rate of gender stereotypes than their children. We didn’t discover gender differences between children.
