Side Differences in Humeri and their Relationship to Handedness

Abstract:

Preference in using one hand more then the other and therefore its greater load by carrying out various activities may affect the emergence of asymmetry in the humerus, which is often described in the literature. The main goal of the theoretical part of this work was to create an overview of knowledge concerning the side differences in humeri. The main goal of the practical part was to describe the context of selected measurements of the upper limb in relation to the individual's preferred hand. Nine bilaterally symmetrical traits were observed on the sample of 60 subjects with equal representation of right- and left-handed men and women (defined according to the laterality quotient from Edinburgh Handedness Inventory). Differences between males and females, bilateral differences and differences between right- and left-handed individuals were analyzed using parametric and nonparametric statistical tests. The measurements that are directly related to the humerus did not reveal significant differences associated with hand preference. There were no significant differences found in the observed characteristics between right-handed and left-handed men, between right-handed and left-handed women significant differences were found in circumference measurements and hand-grip strength. The observed results suggest that the dimensions on the upper limb in left-handed individuals are more symmetrical than in the right-handed ones. Clearer drawing of conclusions requires further research.

Abstract:

Preferencia jednej ruky a tým jej väčšie zaťažovanie pri rôznych činnostiach môže mať vplyv na vznik asymetrie kosti ramennej, ktorá je v literatúre často popisovaná. Cieľom teoretickej časti práce bolo vytvoriť prehľad poznatkov o stranových rozdieloch kosti ramennej. Cieľom praktickej časti bolo popísať súvislosti asymetrie vybraných rozmerov hornej končatiny s preferenciou ruky. Sledovaných bolo deväť párových znakov na súbore 60 jedincov s rovnakým zastúpením mužov a žien, pravákov a ľavákov (definovaných podľa kvocientu laterality z Edinburgh Handedness Inventory). Pomocou parametrických aj neparametrických štatistických testov boli analyzované pohlavné a medzistranové rozdiely a rozdiely medzi pravákmi a ľavákmi. V rozmeroch, ktoré priamo súvisia s kosťou ramennou neboli zistené významné rozdiely vyplývajúce z uprednostňovania jednej ruky. U mužov neboli medzi pravákmi a ľavákmi zistené štatisticky významné rozdiely v žiadnom sledovanom znaku, medzi ženami praváčkami a ľaváčkami sa vyskytovali významné rozdiely v obvodových mierach a v sile stisku. Výsledky naznačujú, že u ľavákov sú rozmery hornej končatiny symetrickejšie než u pravákov. Vyvodzovanie jednoznačnejších záverov by vyžadovalo ďalší výskum.
