The Portrayal of Piracy in Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island: An Analysis of Long John Silver and the Pirate Representation

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá literární analýzou jednoho z nejznámějších děl skotského autora Roberta Louise Stevensona; Ostrov pokladů (v originále Treasure Island). Práce se věnuje rozboru jeho nejpopulárnější pirátské postavy, Dlouhého Johna Silvera, a dále zobrazení pirátů a pirátství celkově. Úmyslem práce je především poskytnout komplexní analýzu Johna Silvera, který je, i přes jeho pirátství a spáchání mnoho zavrženíhodných činů, velmi poutavou a spletitou postavou, a nedá se tedy jednoznačně označit za klasickou zápornou postavu jako ostatní piráti v knize. Práce také obsahuje přehled pirátství v době tzv. Zlaté éry pirátství na území Karibiku.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis focuses on analysing one of the most well-known novels written by Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson; Treasure Island. The thesis aims to analyse the novel’s most popular pirate character, Long John Silver, and the overall portrayal of pirates and piracy as well. The thesis also deals with the historical background of the Golden Age of piracy, a period during which the novel takes place. The primary aim of the thesis is to offer a complex analysis of Long John Silver, who, despite his piracy and some of the condemnable actions he commits, is still a very charming and likeable character and, therefore, cannot be labelled as a villain in the same manner as the rest of the pirates in the novel.
