Nigeria: government trade policy and corporate social policy - the limits to democracy in post-colonial conditions (case study)

Abstract:

Tato práce představuje případovou studii autonomní Nigérie, přičemž se zabývá otázkami postkoloniální státní legitimity a limitovanosti demokracie v kontextu vládních praktik a iniciativ občanské společnosti. První část práce se soustředí na administrativní strategie státních elit. Druhá část zkoumá vnitrostátní politickou scénu, oscilace legitimity a reakce občanské společnosti. Závěrečná část práce je věnována nadnárodním korporacím coby globálním aktérům v rámci agendy udržitelného rozvoje. Tato závěrečná část postihuje zejména koncept sociální zodpovědnosti korporací, který je následně navázán na případ Nigérie. Základní hypotézou této práce je teze, že je legitimita nigerijských vládních elit postupně oslabována vlivem demokratického deficitu a neefektivní státní správy, což zásadním způsobem omezuje proces demokratizace státu a nutí nadnárodní investory k angažovanosti v místní sociální sféře.

Abstract:

This thesis takes the form of autonomous Nigeria case study. It deals with the problems of post-colonial state legitimacy and democracy’s limits in the context of government policies and civil society initiatives. The first part of the thesis emphasizes state élites’ administrative strategies. The second part analyses intrastate political scene, legitimacy fluctuations and reactions of civil society. The latter part of the thesis is dedicated to transnational corporations as global actors within the sustainable development framework. This latter part primarily introduces the corporate social responsibility concept which is finally linked to Nigeria case. The basis of this research is constituted by the proposition that nigerian government élites’ legitimacy has been weakening because of the influences of democratic deficit and inefficient state administration, which fundamentally constrains national democratization process and compels transnational investors to the involvement in local social sphere.
