Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá odrazem česék historie a kultury ve třech příkladech anglické literatury. Jedná se o dva romány a to román Simona Mawera The Glass Room a román Peggy Kain Prague Winter. Třetím dílem je divadelní hra Rock'n'roll dramatika Toma Stopparda. Děje těchto literárních děl se odhrávají v Československu dvacátého století. Tyto kniho zahrnují odlišná období dvacátého století. Román The Glass Room se odehrává převážně v období mezi světovými válkami a popisuje stavbu a vývoj konkrétního domu. Historii tohoto domu sleduje až do současnosti. Druhý román Prague Winter obsahuje převážně poválečné období a politické procesy padesátých let. Divadelní hra Rock'n'roll zahrnuje období od šedesátých let do roku 1990. Přestože hlavní děje jednotlivých děl se odehrávají v různých okamžicích je možné nalézt období, které je propojuje. Jedná se o období komunistického režimu Československé socialistické republiky. Práce sleduje jakým způsobem autoři čerpají z českých dějin a kultury a do jaké míry využívají podobných způsobů vyobrazení dané doby. Vzhledem k tomu, že se nejedná o jejich domácí prostředí, je dále sledováno jak toto prostředí a doba, ve které se děje odehrávají, ovlivňují hlavní postavy.

Abstract:

The main topic of the thesis is “the influence of the Czech history and culture on three examples of British literature”. There are three primary sources analyzed. Two novels The Glass Room, written by Simon Mawer and Prague Winter, written by Peggy Kain. The third source is a drama Rock'n'roll, written by Tom Stoppard. All the sources are based on different historical periods. The novel The Glass Room is mainly situated between the wars, but the second part of the novel describes the development of a specific place until present days. The second novel Prague Winter covers mainly the post-war Czechoslovakia and the 1950s political trials. The drama Rock n'roll is set in the 1960s up to 1990. Even though the cores of these three sources are set in different times, there is an overlapping period. It is the period of the communist regime of the Czechoslovak Socialistic Republic. The overlapping period is given a slightly different importance and view by the three authors. They way they deal with it will be compared. The thesis aims to find whether there are rather similarities in portraying the culture or history of Czechoslovakia or if they are different in way of describing the events and they way they create the main characters of the works.
