Failed States in sub-Saharan Africa - The Case Study of Zimbabwe

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá studiem slabých a selhávajících států subsaharské Afriky, konkrétně Zimbabwe. Po vymezení slabé státnosti a definicích termínů souvisejících s danou problematikou budou popsány způsoby hodnocení a měření slabosti státu. Z nich největší pozornost je věnována Failed States Index každoročně aktualizovaném organizaci Fund for Peace a časopisem Foreign Policy. Následně se zabývám charakteristikou států subsaharského regionu a jejich náchylnosti ke slabé státnosti. Další část práce bude zaměřena na stručný popis geograficko-historického vývoje Zimbabwe od koloniálního období přes snahy o nezávislost a skutečné vyhlášení nezávislosti až po současnost pod vládou Roberta Mugabeho. Na závěr se pokusím analyzovat současnou situaci v Zimbabwe z hlediska jednotlivých indikátorů Falied States Indexu.

Abstract:

Bachelor thesis deals with the study of weak and failed states in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly Zimbabwe. After the definition of weak statehood and definitions of terms associated with this issue there will be discussed ways of evaluating and measuring the weakness of the state. Of these, the most attention is paid to Failed States Index, annually updated by organization Fund for Peace and Foreign Policy magazine. Then I deal with the characteristics of sub-Saharan countries of the region and their tendency to weak statehood. The next part will focus on a brief description of the geographical and historical development of Zimbabwe from the colonial period through the efforts for independence and actual independence to the present day under the control of Robert Mugabe. At the end, I will try to analyze the current situation in Zimbabwe in terms of individual indicators of Falied States Index.
