The edge effect as a phenomenon that determines mollusc species composition at treeless calcareous fens surrounded by woodland habitats

Abstract:

Cílem této práce bylo nahlédnout do problematiky fenoménu ekotonu a okrajového efektu. Prací na toto téma je mnoho, ale jejich výsledky se velmi různí. Tato práce se věnovala speciálně měkkýšům, o kterých je toho v souvislosti s okrajovým efektem známo jen velmi málo. Studovanou oblastí byly Západní Karpaty a zkoumána byla otevřená pěnovcová prameniště (Caricion davallianae) obklopená lesnatým okolím. Právě tato stanoviště hostí unikátní malakofaunu a z lesního lemu sem pronikají striktně lesní druhy. To je naprosto ojedinělý fenomén, uvědomíme-li si, jak je les a prameniště ekologicky odlišné. Pokusit se vysvětlit tento trend bylo tedy dalším úkolem mé práce. Proč a které lesní druhy pronikají na otevřená slatiniště. Byly použity dva datové soubory. Na 26-ti lokalitách byl vzorek malakofauny odebírán ze třech ploch: střed prameniště, ekoton a lesnaté okolí. Z hlavních faktorů byla měřena hodnota pH a kunduktivity vody, velikost prameniště a kvalita lesnatého okolí. Druhý soubor čítal 97 pramenišť, zde byla k dispozici malakofauna jejich středů a celá řada faktorů prostředí. Z obecně tradovaných vlastností ekotonu, se nepodařilo prokázat jeho vyšší druhovou bohatost, ani vyšší celkovou abundanci. Ale bezesporu zde dochází k mísení druhů z obou stanovišť. Dále byly nalezeny některé druhy, které můžeme považovat za ekotonální, jejichž abundance zde byly signifikantně nejvyšší. Nebylo zjištěno vyšší množství exotických druhů, což se obecně traduje. Na druhou stranu se zde nacházelo přes 50 % procent jedinců všech ubikvistů, jež byli sebráni na všech stanovištích dohromady. Byly nalezeny tři striktně lesní druhy, které pronikají na prameniště a jsou zde zřejmě schopny dlouhodoběji přežívat. Jako hlavní faktor korelující s průnikem lesních měkkýšů se ukázalo jejich zastoupení v lesnatém okolí. Dalšími signifikantními faktory byly velikost prameniště a rozdíl pH mezi prameništěm a lesnatým okolím. Důležitost množství vápníku při pronikání lesních měkkýšů se ukázala i ve velkém datovém souboru 97 lokalit. Zde se dále projevil vliv zastínění prameniště, jako faktoru důležitého pro přežití lesních druhů měkkýšů na otevřených slatiništích.

Abstract:

The aim of this study was to elucidate ecological patterns possibly associated with the ecoton and edge effect. There are many studies dealt with this topic, but their results differ a lot. This study was focused on mollusc assemblages, which have been only little investigated in this respect. The research was carried out in the Western Carpathians and treeless calcareous fens (Caricion davallianae) surrounded by woodland habitats were explored. These fens host a unique mollusc fauna enriched by several woodland species that commonly penetrate into the central part of these treeless fens. Therefore, the next task was to explain reasons of this unusual phenomenon and to find species which contribute to this pattern. Two data sets were used. First, there were 3 samples of molluscs taken from each of 26 sites. The samples were taken from the centre of each fen, from ecotone and from woodland surroundings. Water pH and conductivity values, fen area and the quality of woodland surroundings were measured. The second dataset contained 97 sites with known mollusc fauna from the center of each fen and supplemented by many environmental factors. I did not succeed in proving both higher species richness and higher total abundance in the ecotone. Nevertheless, there was a mixing of species from both neighboring habitats. Some species that can be acting as ecotonal were found; their abundance was significantly highest in ecotone. Ecotone hosted more than 50% of all individuals of ubiquitous species, collected in all habitats. Three strictly woodland species were found in the centres of fens, which are probably able to survive here. Mollusc richness in woodland surroundings proved to be the main factor for explaining the penetration of forest species into treeless fens. The area of fen habitat and the difference between pH values in fen and forest were other significant and important factors. The importance of calcium content for the spreading of forest species was also confirmed in the second dataset of 97 sites. Among the remaining factors the influence of fen shading was most significant.
