Medicine in-between magic and science

Abstract:

Tato práce je teoretickou přípravou budoucího výzkumu. Zabývá se magickým či „iracionálním“ myšlením v oblasti léčení, a to nejen v té alternativní, které je toto myšlení přisuzováno. Věnuje se především implicitní přítomností takového myšlení i v klasické medicíně. Biomedicína nahlíží na alternativní způsoby léčby jako na magické praktiky. Přesto jsou tyto alternativy často v západní společnosti využívány. V tomto kontextu se hovoří o medicínském pluralismu - postoj klasické medicíny k alternativám shrnuje druhá kapitola. Požadavek vědeckosti a objektivnosti medicíny v západní společnosti vyvolává úvahy nad důležitostí, kterou tato společnost přisuzuje zdravotnímu stavu jednotlivců. Práce se proto zabývá okolnostmi a příčinami této nové role zdraví. Tato část by měla přinést odpověď na otázky, proč je medicína právě tou oblastí, ve které možné magické myšlení vyvolává největší znepokojení. Dále se práce zabývá samotným magickým myšlením. Magické chování a myšlení je těžké definovat jako kategorii, neboť se jedná o soubor nejrůznějším praktik různých kultur. V tomto ohledu přijímám názor Lévi-Strausse, a sice že magie jako kategorie slouží k označení veškerého „nevědeckého“ chování a myšlení, a pro mezikulturní pochopení nemá větší význam. V práci je této kategorie použito k nahlédnutí na západní společnost a samotnou vědu. Poslední část práce se tedy zabývá deklarovanou univerzálností a objektivností biomedicíny, která je úzce spjata s myšlenkou vědeckosti.

Abstract:

This thesis is meant to be a theoretical preparing for future research work. It inquires into a magic or "irrational" thinking in the area of healing, not only in the area of the "alternative" medicine to which is this thinking usually attributed. It attends especially to the implicit presence of magical thinking in the biomedicine. Biomedicine considers the alternative ways of healing to be magical practices. Nevertheless these alternatives are used often in the western society. In this context we are speaking about medical pluralism. Attitude of the classical medicine to the alternatives is the point of the second chapter. The request for the science and objectivity of the medicine in the western society provoke questions on the importance, assigned by this society to the health of the individual. Therefore this thesis inquires into the conditions and causes of this new role of the health. This part should answer the questions why is the medicine the very field where the magical thinking arouses the biggest uneasiness. Next the thesis deals with the magical thinking itself. Magical behaviour or thinking is hard to define as a category as it is a set of very different practises of different cultures. In this regard I accept the opinion of Levi-Strauss that the magic as a category tends to mark all "unscientific" behaviour and thinking and therefore has not a big significance for the inter-cultural understanding. In the thesis this category is used for an insight on the western society and the science itself. The last part of the thesis employs itself with declared universality and objectiveness of the biomedicine, which is closely adherent to the scientism.
