Abstract:

Zastánci aktivního stárnutí, které je dominantní reakcí na procesy populačního stárnutí v EU, považují vykonávání co nejvyššího množství aktivit za předpoklad kvalitnějšího života ve vyšším věku. Disertační práce Důsledky aktivit podporovaných v rámci přístupu aktivního stárnutí pro kvalitu života shrnuje existující poznatky a metodologicky propracovanou a inovativní cestou testuje tento hlavní předpoklad přístupu aktivního stárnutí. Analýza dat kontextualizuje vliv nejdůležitějších typů rolí ve vyšším věku. Zjištění dále ukazují, jak čistý vliv aktivit závisí na individuálních charakteristikách, náplni role a makro-kontextu celé situace, a jak jsou důsledky i dostupnost rolí v kontextu EU silně strukturovány. Aktivní stárnutí je tak identifikováno jako silně normativní přístup založený na rozporuplných empirických důkazech, který může sloužit zájmům privilegovaných skupin například přesunem zodpovědnosti ze státu na jednotlivce. Práce dochází k závěru, že je na poli gerontologie třeba rozvíjet teorie reflektující různé úrovně kontextu lidského života. Tyto teorie by pak mohly položit základ novým sociálním politikám založených na vědeckých poznatcích a reflektujících rozmanité potřeby starších skupin populace.

Abstract:

The active ageing approach is the dominant reaction to processes of population ageing in the EU claiming that as many activities as possible lead to higher quality of life in older adults. The thesis The consequences of activities supported by the active ageing approach for quality of life compiles the existing knowledge and tests the central claim of the active ageing approach in a methodologically rigorous and innovative way. The analysis contextualises the effect of the most important types of roles in later life and illustrates how the net effect depends on the individual characteristics, role content, and macro-context of the situation. Moreover, the findings show that not only the consequences, but also the availability of the roles are strongly structured within the EU. Hence, the active ageing approach is identified as a strongly normative approach based on spurious empirical evidence, which may serve the interests of privileged groups by transferring the responsibility for life outcomes from governments to individuals. The dissertation argues that context-sensitive gerontological theories should be developed in order to create foundations for more evidence-based social policies reflecting the varied needs of older adults.
