The integration of different approaches to evaluation of stories evoked by Thematic Apperception Test: the Interpersonal Decentering and the Affective Scale

Abstract:

Cílem disertační práce je návrh interpretačního přístupu k příběhům evokovaných Tématicko- apercepčním testem a příspět k validizaci škál Interpersonální decentrace a Afektivní škály. Východiskem pro integraci byla předchozí metaanalýza šestnácti přístupů k hodnocení TAT. V práci prezentovaný system, který by mohl být využit k diagnostice osobnosti, se tak opírá o kategorie vyvozené z této metaanalýzy: pojetí světa, percepce a myšlení, vztah k sobě a druhým, emoce, obranné mechanismy, zralost self (Čermák, I., Fikarová, T., 2012) Integrovaný interpretační přístup prezentovaný v práci se snaží odpovědět na následující otázky: Jaké je poselství příběhu? Jak je příběh kongruentní s podnětem? Jak se příběh vyvíjí (jaký je asociační proces)? Jaká je úroveň interpersonální decentrace? Jaká je podoba emocí (jejich zdroje, intenzita apod.) Jaká je úroveň obranných mechanismů? V proceduře jsou používány systémy H. Teglasiové, P. Cramerové, R. S. Jenkinsové a A. D. Součástí práce je kazuistika, na které je ilustrována propojenost jednotlivých systémů. Integrovaný interpretační přístup je teoreticky zakotven v teoriích objektních vztahů, mentalizace, attachmentu, obranných mechanismů apod. Výzkum byl proveden u souboru adolescentů s manifestními obtížemi v chování (35 osob) a u souboru adolescentů bez manifestních problémů v chování (21 osob). Mezi zkoumanými skupinami byly zjištěny signifikantní rozdíly v úrovních interpersoální decentrace (vyšší úroveň byla identifována u adolescentů bez manifestních problémů v chování) a v úrovních afektivní škály (jako emočně zralejší se jeví adolescentů bez manifestních problémů v chování). Výsledky výzkumu naznačují, že oba použité skórovací systémy mají uspokojivou diferenciální validitu.

Abstract:

The aim of the PhD thesis is to propose an interpretive approach to stories evoked by Thematic Apperception Test that could be used in conditions of personality assessment. The purpose of research is also to contribute to validity of the Interpersonal decentring scale and the Affective scale. Assessment procedure elaborated in thesis is based on the previous meta-analysis of sixteen approaches to TAT evaluation. The sources for this procedure are aspects of personality functioning inferred from meta-analysis mention above: concept of the world, perception and thinking, relationship to oneself and others, emotion, defence mechanisms, maturity of the self (Čermák, I., Fikarová, T., 2012). The aim of the Integrative interpretative approach presented in my thesis is to answer the following six questions useful for personality assessment): What is the import of the story? How is the story congruent with the stimulus? How is the story developed (what kind of associations can we identify)? What is the level of the interpersonal decentering? What is the organization of emotions? Are the defence mechanisms mature or immature? The systems developed by H. Teglasi, P. Cramer, R. S. Jenkins and A. D. Thomas were used in this integrative procedure. The case study is employed as an implementation of the integrative interpretation approach in personality assessment. Interconnection of scoring and interpretive systems is evident in the assessment process and thus our approach seems to be a useful diagnostic tool. Integrative Interpretative Approach is anchored in different theoretical perspectives such as mentalization, attachment, and object relationships theories. The research sample included adolescents with manifest behavioral problems (35 participants), and adolescents without manifest behavioural troubles (21 participants). Significant differences in levels of Interpersonal decentring and scores of Affective scale were found (adolescents without manifest behavioural troubles had higher level of interpersonal decentring and higher scores in Affective scale). Presented results suggest both scoring systems have sufficient differential validity.
