Female body reshaping as identity reflection

Abstract:

Práce si kladla za cíl nahlédnout (tělesné) zkušenosti žen, jež podstoupily plastickou operaci poprsí. Za využití narativního přístupu jsem se snažila porozumět estetické chirurgii jako příležitosti k autobiografické bilanci a způsobu reflexe identity. Chirurgická alterace těla je v příbězích pěti žen konstruována jako prostředek nabytí normálního těla, jako cesta k ‘tichému‘ ztělesnění. Normálnost se přitom ukazuje jako ústřední téma, centrální charakteristika artikulované a reprezentované (tělesné) identity. Tělo v příbězích vystupuje jako projekt, jež ženy přetvářejí; je prostorem uplatnění moci. Jeho proměna je však zároveň prostředkem k získání větší kontroly nad vlastním tělem i životem. Plastická operace je nahlížena jako riskantní, přesto poučeně zvolený nástroj přetváření vlastního těla, jako pragmatická, racionální volba ženy, jež se snaží lépe ztělesnit, kým se cítí být, a jež reflektuje sociální status vzhledu v dnešní společnosti.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis was to explore the (corporeal) experiences of women who underwent breast plastic surgery. Using the narrative approach, I tried to comprehend aesthetic surgery as an occasion for autobiographical accounting and a particular kind of identity reflection. The surgical body alteration in the narratives is constructed as an instrument to acquire a normal body, as a way to ‘silent embodiment‘. The normality seems to be the pivotal theme, central characteristic of the (corporeal) identity articulated and represented in the narratives. The body is framed as a project that is being reshaped by women; it is the field for exercising power. The surgical alteration also appears to be the tool of gaining more control over one own’s body and life. Plastic surgery is acknowledged as perilous, yet knowledgeably chosen instrument of reshaping one own’s body, as a pragmatic, rational option of woman who strives to better embody her own sense of her self and who recognized the social status of appearance in today society.
