Identification of similar websites for phishing detection

Anotácia:

Phishing sa bez pochýb stal významným a globálnym problémom. V dnešnej dobe môžu ľudia na internete robiť čokoľvek. Útočníci majú preto veľa možností na to kde a na koho útočiť, či už je to jednotlivec alebo firma s obrovskými ročnými výnosmi. Mnoho techník na detekciu phishingových stránok bolo navrhnutých s cieľom bojovať proti týmto útočníkom. Prvá časť tejto práce ponúka komplexný prehľad o súčasne využívaných metódach na detekciu phishingových stránok. Clustrovanie (zhlukovanie) už detekovaných phishingových stránok je viac než potrebné, keďže napomáha v hľadaní a objavovaní spoločných charakteristík a vzorov využívaných útočníkmi. Phishingové stránky sú mnohokrát len šablóny upravené tak, aby napodobňovali legitímnu webovú stránku. Táto práca navrhuje metódu na clustrovanie phishingových stránok, ktorá využíva sentence embedding techniky. Stránky sú clustrované na základe extrahovaných segmentov textu, ako je názov stránky a n najdôležitejších slov textu stránky. Vo výsledku sú vytvorené clustre (skupiny) obsahujúce podobné podvodné stránky. Experimenty boli uskutočnené na troch predtrénovaných SBERT modeloch. Práca ďalej poskytuje výsledky clustrovania navrhnutej metódy ako i zhodnotenie jej účinnosti.

Abstract:

Undoubtedly, phishing has become a significant concern and global problem. Nowadays, people can do almost anything on the Internet. Therefore, attackers have numerous options on where and whom to attack, whether an individual or a large company with immense annual revenues. In order to fight against these criminals, many phishing detection techniques have been proposed. The first part of this work offers a comprehensive overview of the current state of the art of phishing detection methods. Clustering the detected websites is immensely important, since it provides a helping hand in finding common characteristics and patterns used in phishing attacks. Phishing websites are many times just templates modified to mimic the legitimate website. Therefore clustering similar websites could identify those traits and with that, fight against phishing crime. This thesis proposes a method for clustering phishing websites that leverages sentence embedding techniques. Websites are clustered by utilizing particular extracted segments of text such as the title and the top n most important words of the website. As a result, the method creates clusters with similar fraudulent websites. Experiments were carried out on a total of 3 different pre-trained SBERT models. Furthermore, the thesis provides clustering results of the proposed method along with an evaluation of its effectiveness.
