The link between children's behavior perceived by teachers and ADHD label

Abstract:

The main focus of this research is the link between the ADHD label and how teachers perceive the behaviour of these children. Additionally the connection between how this perception is affected by the gender of the child, personal experience of teachers with ADHD in general - the number of children with ADHD diagnosis the teacher has taught and the sufficiency of ADHD trainings attended by teachers was analyzed. The sample consisted of 463 teachers teaching now, or in the past at schools in Slovakia. All of them filled out an online survey, where they ranked the behaviour of a child described in a vignette that was attached. There were four different forms of survey, which differed in the attached vignettes. The vignettes differed in the presence of the ADHD label and in the gender of the child. The link between the ADHD label and how teachers perceive the behaviour of these children was not confirmed. However, teachers perceived this behaviour as less serious if the ADHD label was present. Additionally, teachers expect that they can handle the child better if it's a girl and teachers, who perceive the ADHD trainings they attended as sufficient expect that they will endure less stress while teaching this child.

Abstract:

Táto práca sa zamerala v prvom rade na skúmanie vzťahu medzi nálepkou ADHD a pedagógmi vnímaným správaním u detí. Následne bol ešte skúmaný vzťah medzi tým, ako na toto vnímanie pôsobí pohlavie dieťaťa, osobná skúsenosť učiteľov s takýmto dieťaťom, počet učených detí s diagnózou ADHD a vnímaná dostatočnosť školení na túto tému učiteľmi. Vzorka obsahovala 463 učiteľov vyučujúcich súčasne, či v minulosti na školách na Slovensku. Každý z nich vyplnil online dotazník, kde hodnotil správanie dieťa v popisku, ktorý sa v rámci dotazníka nachádzal. Dotazníky boli rozosielané v štyroch rôznych formách, ktoré sa navzájom líšili prítomnosťou nálepky ADHD v popise správania dieťaťa a v pohlaví tohto dieťaťa. Vzťah medzi nálepkou ADHD a pedagógmi vnímaným správaním u týchto detí sa nepotvrdil. Pedagógovia však vnímali závažnosť správania u týchto detí nižšie, pokiaľ bola nálepka ADHD prítomná. Ďalej pedagógovia predpokladajú, že budú lepšie zvládať takéto dieťa, pokiaľ sa jedná o dievča a pedagógovia s vnímaným dostatočným počtom školení na tému ADHD predpokladajú, že pri učení takéhoto dieťaťa budú pociťovať menej stresu.
