The relationship between working memory, reaction time and sport performance in adolescent basketball players.

Abstract:

The aim of the bachelor thesis was to investigate the influence of the level of se-lected cognitive functions on sports performance in basketball. Based on research findings, the best determinant of sports success could be cognitive equipment. Under this assumption, a correlational research was conducted, in which 11 adolescent male participants aged from 16 to 19 (m=18.08, sd=0.94) which played in the Slovak basketball league Junior U19. Participants took part in reaction time, color and mean-ing interference index and working memory capacity tests using the Stroop test, Deary-Liewald test, and n-back test. The results of the probands were compared with the trainer's estimate about the order of the participants in the reaction speed tests. Game productivity data was used from official game statistics. The results revealed that the trainer's estimate is positively strongly correlated with reaction time of re-sponse to a simple visual stimulus. The average game productivity does not correlate significantly with any of the measured cognitive functions, nor with the coach's ex-pectation. Despite the limitations of the small research sample, we interpret these results as an indicator of the fact that a good coach knows his trainees, their strengths and weaknesses. The result of the study can have significant potential for training and game practice and can be an inspiration for subsequent research in the given area.

Abstract:

Cieľom bakalárskej práce bolo preskúmať vplyv úrovne vybraných kognitívnych funkcií na športový výkon v basketbale. Na základe výskumných zistení najlepším determinantom športového úspechu môže byť kognitívna výbava. Za tohto predpo-kladu bol prevedený korelačný výskum, ktorého sa zúčastnilo 11 dospievajúcich mužských účastníkov vo veku od 16 do 19 rokov (m=18,08, sd=0,94) hrajúcich v slo-venskej basketbalovej súťaži Juniori U19. Participanti absolvovali testy na reakčný čas, index interferencie farby a významu, a kapacitu pracovnej pamäte za využitia metód Stroopov test, Deary-Liewald test a test n-back. Výsledky probandov boli po-rovnávané s predpokladom trénera o poradia účastníkov v testoch na rýchlosť reak-cie. Údaje o hernej produktivite boli použité z oficiálnej hernej štatistiky. Výsledky odhalili, že odhad trénera pozitívne silne koreluje s rýchlosťou reakcie na jednoduchý vizuálny podnet. Priemerná herná produktivita signifikantne nekoreluje so žiadnou z meraných kognitívnych funkcií, ani s očakávaním trénera. Napriek limitácii malej výskumnej vzorky tieto výsledky interpretujeme ako ukazovateľ faktu, že dobrý tré-ner pozná svojich zverencov, ich silné a slabé stránky. Výsledok štúdie môže mať vý-znamný potenciál pre tréningovú a hernú prax a môže byť inšpiráciou pre nadväzujú-ci výskum v danej oblasti.
