Variability of gut microbiota of herbivorous insects in relation to morphology and ontogenesis of the digestive tract

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá střevní mikrobiotou herbivorního hmyzu především u řádu motýlů (Lepidoptera). Zmíněné téma probírá ve vztahu k morfologii, ontogenezi a fyziologii trávicího traktu. Prvním cílem práce je vypracovat literární rešerši založenou na přehledu současných vědeckých studií zabývajících se zmíněným tématem. Druhým cílem je souhrn poznatků o složení tzv. "jádrové mikrobioty" u řádu motýlů, neboť s probíraným tématem úzce souvisí (prochází celou ontogenezí hostitele, je uzpůsobena morfologii a vzájemně se ovlivňuje s fyziologií trávicího traktu). Herbivoři neboli býložravci se živí rostlinami. Řád motýlů řadíme k holometabolnímu hmyzu a lze ho umístit na první příčku s největším počtem herbivorních druhů. U housenek, tak jako u ostatních herbivorů je střevo v podstatě trubice, která se skládá ze tří fyziologicky odlišných částí, a to přední střevo (foregut), střední střevo (midgut) a zadní střevo (hindgut). Všichni živočichové, ať už bezobratlí nebo obratlovci, jsou kolonizováni mikroby. Existují dva základní způsoby, jak je můžou organismy získat, a to vertikálním transportem z rodiče na potomka či horizontálním transportem z prostředí nebo od jiných organismů. Druhová rozmanitost mikrobioty je silně ovlivněna prostředím, potravou, vývojovým stádiem motýla a fyziologií střev daného druhu. Převládajícím kmenem mikrobioty v trávicím traktu motýlů jsou Proteobacteria, dále následují Firmicutes, Actinobacteria a Bacteroidetes. Pochopení role symbiotických bakterií a hub může poskytnout nová vodítka pro zlepšení současných technik integrované ochrany před škůdci či pomoci k pochopení adaptace nebo expanze hmyzích hostitelů v přírodě.

Abstract:

The bachelor's thesis deals with the gut microbiota of herbivorous insects, especially from the order of butterflies and moths (Lepidoptera). It discusses this topic in relation to the morphology, ontogenesis and physiology of the digestive tract. The first aim of the thesis is to provide a literature review based on an overview of current scientific studies dealing with the topic. The second aim is a summary of knowledge about the composition of the so-called "core microbiota" in the order Lepidoptera, because it is closely related to the topic (core microbiota passes through the entire ontogenesis of the host, is adapted to morphology of digestive tract and interacts with its physiology). Herbivores feed on plants. The Lepidoptera order is classified to a holometabolic insects and can be placed in the first place with the largest number of herbivorous species. Caterpillar's gut is basically a tube-like organ, as in other herbivores, which consists of three physiologically distinct parts, namely foregut, midgut and hindgut. All animals, whether invertebrates or vertebrates, are colonized by microbes. There are two basic ways in which organisms can obtain them, either by vertical transmission from parent to offspring or by horizontal transmission from the environment or from other organisms. The species diversity of the microbiota is strongly influenced by the environment, diet, the developmental stage of the butterfly and the physiology of the gut of the species. The predominant strain of microbiota in the digestive tract of Lepidoptera is Proteobacteria, followed by Firmicutes, Actinobacteria and Bacteroidetes. Understanding the role of symbiotic bacteria and fungi can provide new clues for improving current integrated pest management techniques or helping to understant how insect host adapt to or expand in nature.
