Adolescents and blogs: self injuring as theme of online community

Abstract:

Práce se zaměřuje na problematiku sebepoškozování u adolescentů, kteří o sebepoškozování hovoří na blozích (online deníčcích) a toto společné téma je spojuje v online komunity. Zkoumána byla motivace adolescentů hovořit o sebepoškozování na blozích, možné dopady takového jednání a prožívání sebepoškozování samotnými adolescenty. Ve výzkumné části byla použita kvalitativní analýza dat, konkrétně metoda zakotvené teorie. Zdrojem dat byly polostrukturované rozhovory s celkem 9 dospívajícími bloggerkami (ve věku střední adolescence). Nejdůležitějšími poznatky výzkumu bylo zjištění, že blogová komunita spojená tématem sebepoškozování je adolescentkami vnímána jako podpůrná, má tendenci uzavírat se pomoci zvenčí a zároveň posilovat negativní postoje vůči odborné pomoci; dále, že existuje určitá vazba mezi sebepoškozováním a subkulturami Emo a Gothic; a že internet, potažmo blog, jsou důležitými činiteli šíření informací o sebepoškozování. Poslední zmíněné je významné zejména z hlediska fenoménu sociální nákazy sebepoškozování.

Abstract:

The work focuses on the topic of self-injury of teenagers, that express their ideas and experience with self harm on internet blogs and this topic unites them into online community. The motivation to speak about self-injury on blogs was examined together with possible impacts of such a behavior and co-experience of self harm with other teenagers. In the research part of the project the quality data analysis was used, concretely the grounded theory method. The source of data were semi-structured interviews with total of 9 female teenage bloggers (at the age of middle adolescence). The main knowledge gained by the research was the discovery, that bloggers community connected through self harm topic is appreciated by teenagers as supportive, tends to close itself from help from outer world and also strenghten the negative attitude of its members against professional help. It also brought a discovery of some connection between self harm and Gothic and Emo subcultures. Also it showed, that the Internet and blog are important agents for spreading of self-injury information. The last discovery mentioned is important especially in terms that self-injury may be socially contagious.
