Postmodern Nostalgia in the Fiction of Don Delillo

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce je prozkoumat roli nostalgie ve světle postmodernismu. Konkrétně tato práce zkoumá aspekty nostalgie na příkladu dvou DeLillových románů: jeho prvního významného kritického a komerčního úspěchu, White Noise (1985), a jednoho z jeho pozdějších románu Underworld (1997). Ačkoli se tyto práce ve svém kontextu liší, nabízejí jedinečnou interpretaci stavu postmoderní společnosti. Oba romány se soustřeďují na hrdinské boje jednotlivce, který není schopen vyrovnat se se současnou společností, výsledkem čehož se stává uchýlení postav k nostalgii. Tato práce je rozdělena do dvou hlavních částí - teoretické a analytické. Cílem teoretické části práce je poté představit kritické teorie postmodernismu, možnosti postmoderní literatury a koncepce nostalgie, které nejvíce přispívají k účelu následné literární analýzy obou románů.

Abstract:

The aim of this bachelor’s thesis is to explore the role of nostalgia in light of postmodernism. In particular, the thesis explores the aspects of nostalgia on the example of two DeLillo’s novels: his first enormous critical and commercial success, White Noise (1985), and his later novel Underworld (1997). Although different in context, these works offer a unique interpretation of the state of postmodern society. Both novels concentrate on the heroic struggles of the individual who does not seem to cope with the contemporary society, the result of which becomes the characters’ recourse to nostalgia. This thesis is divided into two main parts - theoretical and analytical. The aim of the theoretical part of the thesis, then, is to present the critical theories of postmodernism, the possibilities of postmodern literature and the conceptions of nostalgia that most contribute to the purpose of the subsequent literary analysis of the two novels.
