The Portrayal of Poverty in the Cinema of Ken Loach

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce je analýza vyobrazení chudoby ve třech filmech Kena Loache: Raining Stones, I, Daniel Blake a Sorry We Missed You. První dvě kapitoly projednávají řadu příčin a důsledků chudoby ve Velké Británii, aby bylo možno poskytnout hlubší pochopení problémů diskutovaných ve filmech. Třetí kapitola se zabývá sociálním realismem, koncepcí filmové tvorby, která soustředí pozornost na sociopolitické podmínky života pracující třídy, tak jak je tomu i v Loachových filmech. Dále se zmiňuji o stylu a pracovních postupech Loachovy tvorby. Následující tři kapitoly analyzují způsob, jak jsou v jednotlivých filmech vylíčeny různé aspekty chudoby. Docházím k závěru, že Loach svými filmy zvyšuje informovanost o chudobě ve Velké Británii a nabádá diváka k empatii vůči chudobným lidem. Dosahuje toho kritikou chybných kroků vlády, ale i sympatizujícím a realistickým vyobrazením svých filmových postav.

Abstract:

The thesis aims to analyse the portrayal of poverty in three films directed by Ken Loach: Raining Stones, I, Daniel Blake and Sorry We Missed You. The first two chapters of the thesis present a number of causes and results of poverty in Britain, in order to provide a deeper insight into the issues that are discussed in the films. The third chapter introduces social realism, a type of cinema that draws attention to the socio-political conditions of the working class, as Loach’s films do. Furthermore, Loach’s style and techniques are discussed. The following three chapters analyse the way in which various aspects of poverty are presented in each of the films. The findings suggest that in his films, Loach raises awareness of poverty in Britain and encourages the spectator to empathise with the poor, both by subtly criticizing the shortcomings of the government and by making his characters realistic and likeable.
