Madonna of Brankovice

Abstract:

Předkládaná bakalářská práce pojednává o Madoně z Brankovic, dřevěné skulptuře z 1. pol. 14.stol. Práce se zabývá vývojem ikonografického typu trůnící madony od počátku křesťanství do 2. pol.14. stol. a vývojem trůnicí madony na Moravě. Nejvýznamější částí je analýza vývoje sochy Madony z Brankovic. Nejdříve je popsána socha z detailního pohledu, poté jsou základní charakteristiky porovnány s Madonami Opavskou a trůnícími Madonami z téže doby z Rakouska, jako je Madona z Klosterneuburgu nebo Madony katedrály Sv. Štěpána ve Vídni. Studie shromažďuje dosavadní informace z restaurátorkých prací, historii Brankovic- místa, kde byla tato socha nalezena. Získané poznatky by měly posloužit jako úvod pro další studium v této oblasti.

Abstract:

The proposed thesis is aimed at the wooden sculpture of Madonna of Brankovice, which is a very specific piece of art that has survived from the early 14th century as a proof of a hight culture background on Moravia in the time of rule of the Luxemburg dynasty that is describe in the second charter of the thesis. The sequent part outlines the development of iconographic type of Madonna on the Throne that has extended from the begining of Christianity to the second half of the 14th century. The special attention is paid to the situation in Moravia. The next part, pivotal one for this thesis, analyses iconography of the sculpture of Madonna of Brankovice. Firstly the piece of art is described in detailes and subsequently it is compared with some important sculptures that have survived not only in this country, such as Madonna of Opava (Troppau), but in present-day Austria, such as Madonna of Klosterneuburg or sculptures of St. Stephen Cathedral in Wiena. Fruthermore information and reports about restoring of the Brankovice carved piece are presented. This thesis is considered to be the contribution to research in the field of Gothic sculpture not only in Moravia but in Central-European area, too.
