V životním prostředí se vyskytují xenobiotika a biologicky aktivní látky, které mohou mít vliv na činnost ledvin. Ledviny jsou životně důležitý orgán, který zabezpečuje homeostázu organismu, udržuje stálý objem extracelulární tekutiny a reguluje iontovou a acidobazickou rovnováhu, a jakákoliv odchylka od normálního stavu může být pro organismus zátěží.
