(Mis)recognition, and Imaginary and Material Home of Migrants

Abstract:

Táto bakalářské práce je koncipována jako projekt výzkumu a jejím cílem je nabídnout teoretická a metodologická východiska pro budoucí výzkum domova migrantů. Tento projekt nabízí způsob, jak prozkoumat vnímání a konstruování domova migranty, a to pomocí polostrukturovaných rozhovorů a pozorování domácností migrantů z bývalého Sovětského svazu. Práce také otevírá debatu o významnosti (zne)uznání a hlavně jeho transformace v rámci migrace pro způsob, kterým je přistěhovalci zažíván domov. Projekt zdůrazňuje, že pro lepší zachycení různorodosti (zne)uznání, jež migranti zažívají v závislosti na jejích sociální pozici v původní a v hostující zemi, je důležité stanovit několik cílových skupin. Součástí tohoto projektu je také analýza pilotního rozhovoru, který jsem uskutečnila s reprezentantkou jedné z vytyčených cílových skupin – s ruskou studentkou. Tato analýza poukazuje na specifika transformace (zne)uznání v rámci studentské migrace, která je často spojena s přechodem do dospělosti, a také sleduje vliv této transformace na imaginární domov mé respondentky a na její materiální praktiky v rámci domácnosti, ve které bydlí.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis is conceived as a project of research with the goal of suggesting a theoretical and methodological basis for the future research of a migrants’ home. This project suggests, by using semi-structured interviews and observations of migrants’ households, a way to explore how migrants from the former Soviet Union perceive and construct their homes. This project opens a debate about the importance of (mis)recognition and, most importantly, its transformation within the process of migration for the way home is experienced by migrants. This project stresses that it is important to define several target groups, depending on the social position of migrants in the country of origin and in the host country, for a more comprehensive understanding and capturing of the variedness of (mis)recognition that migrants experience. A part of this project also concerns the analysis of the pilot interview with a representative of one of the defined target groups: a Russian student. In this analysis the paper identifies the specifics of transformation of (mis)recognition within a student migration, that is often connected with a transition from childhood to adulthood. Within the analysis the paper also follows an influence of the transformation of (mis)recognition on my respondent’s imaginative home and on her material practices within her established living space.
