A Discourse Analysis of Rhetorical Strategy in Mainstream News Media: Comparing News Coverage of MLK and Malcolm X

Abstract:

Martin L. King a Malcolm X jako dvě vůdčí postavy amerického hnutí za občanská práva 60. let slouží jako příklad toho, jak dobové zpravodajství používalo přesvědčovací strategie ke zkreslení jejich poselství. Hloubkový pohled na tyto přesvědčovací strategie odhaluje, jak novináři apelovali na důvěryhodnost, emoce a logiku, aby vyzdvihli nebo naopak zlehčili aspekty postav aktivistů ve službách rasistické hegemonie. Tato studie otevírá cestu pro budoucí výzkum toho, jak novináři používají rétorické strategie k utváření veřejného vnímání aktivistů za občanská práva, a tedy i jejich úspěchu.

Abstract:

As two enduring figures of the 1960s US Civil Rights Movement, Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X exemplify how contemporary news reporting used persuasive strategies to misrepresent their messages. An in-depth analysis of these strategies reveals how journalists appealed to credibility, emotion, and logic to either elevate or diminish aspects of the activists' characters in service to a racist hegemony. This study paves the way for future research into how journalists use rhetorical strategies to shape public perception of civil rights activists and, therefore, their success.
