Dramaturgy and economic aspects of the Archa Theatre (How changing a legal status has influenced functioning and dramaturgy of the theatre)

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá otázkou, do jaké míry proměna právní subjektivity může ovlivnit fungování, organizaci a financování kulturní instituce a jakých složek provozu se tato proměna konkrétně nejvíc dotýká. Jako příklad pro tuto studii jsem si vybrala Divadlo Archa, a to jak z důvodu, že se jedná o kulturní centrum evropského významu, tak proto, že patří mezi první skupinu divadel, které prošly I. etapou transformace. První část diplomové práce je věnována historii budovy Legiobanky, v níž v současné době Divadlo Archa sídlí, od jejího vybudování jako reprezentativní budovy banky s koncertním sálem v letech 1920-1938 až po moderní kulturní středisko evropské úrovně rekonstruované v roce 1991. Druhá kapitola mapuje jednotlivé soubory, které v Legiobance působily, a to od Divadla D Emila Františka Buriana (1933–1959) přes Městské divadlo na Poříčí (1941–1944) během druhé světové války a Divadlo E. F. Buriana (1960–1991) po zániku Divadla D. Třetí část práce se zabývá historií kulturních systémů, divadelních zákonů a celkovou organizací kulturního života v Československu ve XX. století. Čtvrtá část práce se již vztahuje konkrétně k Divadlu Archa, jeho dramaturgii a fungování a financování, a to v době jeho existence jako příspěvkové organizace a dále po změně právní subjektivity jako obecně prospěšné společnosti.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals with the question of to which extent the conversion of a legal status can influence functioning, organization and financing of a cultural institution and which aspects are the most vulnerable in connection with this kind of change. I have chosen the Archa Theatre because it plays a role of a cultural centre on a European level as well as it is one of the theatres which have undergone the first transformation phase. The first part of my diploma thesis deals with the history of the building where The Archa Theatre is situated.The second part examines individual theatre companies which were based in the building of Legiobanka, namely The D Theatre of Emil František Burian (1933-1959), The City Theatre at Poříčí (1941-1944) during the Second World War and The E.F. Burian Theatre (1960-1991). The third part of the thesis handles the history of cultural systems, theatre laws and the overall organization of cultural life in Czechoslovakia in the twentieth century. The forth part of the paper concentrates on the Archa Theatre itself, its dramaturgy, functioning and financing during its grant-maintained organization period and also after changing the legal status into a benevolent society.
