The competition between s-genitive and of-genitive – analysis based on a selected sample of corpus data (BYU-BNC)

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je najít faktory, které mají v praxi klíčový vliv na volbu mezi adnominálním pádem a předložkovým genitivem. Práce se skládá z teoretické a praktické části. V teoretické části jsou na základě literatury definovány faktory, které by mohly výběr jednoho či druhého genitivu ovlivňovat. Praktická část je založena na vzorku dat, který byl získán z korpusu BYU-BNC (British National Corpus), přičemž každý příklad užití adnominálního pádu nebo předložkového genitivu byl analyzován. Na základě analýzy byly v závěru práce vymezeny faktory, které mohou obecně mít na výběr genitivu vliv.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to find the factors, which influence the choice between the s-genitive and of-genitive in their practical usage. The thesis is divided into theoretical and practical part. In the theoretical part, the influencing factors are outlined in accordance with the literature. The practical part is based on a sample of data extracted from BYU-BNC (British National Corpus), while every example of usage of s-genitive or of-genitive was analysed. Based on the analysis the key influencing factors were defined in the conclusion of the thesis.
