United Artists - Prague Branch of the Big Four. Film Rental Business of the American Companies in Czechoslovakia in the first half of the 20the century.

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá historií pražské filiálky americké společnosti United Artists, jež byla založena v Praze v roce 1921. Pobočka United Artists se stala průkopníkem hollywoodských firem v Československu a odstartovala éru poboček amerických výroben na našem území. Práce se zaměřuje jednak na kontextuální pozadí vývoje půjčovenského obchodu v Rakousku-Uhersku, posléze Československu a analyzuje přispění amerických filmů k osamostatnění československé distribuce, a jednak na historii zahraničního obchodu samotné společnosti United Artists ve Spojených státech. Analýzou aktivit pražské filiálky United Artists lze nahlížet na československý filmový trh z mezinárodní perspektivy, neboť tato československá půjčovna byla přímou odnoží hollywoodské firmy United Artists. Tento dílčí výzkum tak spadá do komplexnějšího fenoménu pražských filiálek amerických společností, jehož podrobné zkoumání by poskytlo celistvý pohled na významnou a vlivnou část československého půjčovenského obchodu.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis is focusing on the history of the Prague branch of the American company United Artists, which was established in Prague in 1921. The branch of United Artists was the pioneer of the Hollywood companies in Czechoslovakia and started the era of the foreign exchanges of the american companies. The thesis focuses on the contextual background of the development of the film rental business in Austrian-Hungarian monarchy, eventually Czechoslovakia and analyzes the contribution of the American companies to the forming of the independent Czechoslovakian film rental business, and on the history of the foreign distribution the American company United Artists. It is possible through the analysis of the Prague branch of United Artists to come to better comprehension of the Czechoslovak film market from the international point of view, since this Czechoslovak company was the direct branch of the Hollywood corporation United Artists. This constituent research is meant to be a part of the complex phenomena of the Prague branches of the American companies, which in-depth research would provide compact perspective onto the important and influential section of the Czechoslovak film rental business.
