Behaviour of the polar bear female (Ursus maritimus) in Brno Zoo (Czech Republic) after birth of two newborn cubs

Abstract:

V této bakalářské práci se zabývám medvědem ledním (Ursus maritimus Phipps 1774), který patří mezi největší současné šelmy (Carnivora). V první, rešeršní části, se věnuji medvědům ledním obecně, jejich rozmnožování, odchovu v ZOO Brno, celé ČR i Evropě a problematice s odchovem spojené. Druhá, praktická část, je zaměřena na etologickou analýzu jednotlivých prvků chování samice a jejich kvantitativní změny po porodu a během přirozeného odchovu medvíďat v ZOO Brno. Cílem této bakalářské práce bylo zanalyzovat kamerový záznam z porodního boxu, určit opakující se činnosti v chování samice, jejich délku a vývoj aktivity během dne. Na základě takto získaných informací poznat vývoj chování medvěda ledního, popsat změny jednotlivých činností a dokumentovat cirkadiánní rytmus samice. Bylo analyzováno 312 hodin záběrů z porodního boxu během prvního měsíce života medvíďat. Z výsledků vyplývá, že samice převážnou většinu času spala (průměrně 86,3 % času), a největší část aktivity tvořil allogrooming (průměrně 10,8 % času). S růstem mláďat se prodlužovala doba, kdy byla samice aktivní, zejména allogrooming a autogrooming. Obecně byla samice nejaktivnější v poslední třetině dne (po západu slunce). Byla zaznamenána také reakce samice na hluk. Mortalita medvíďat v zajetí je srovnatelná s odhadovanou mortalitou v přírodě. Ta se však liší u jednotlivých populací medvědů. Velký vliv na ni má také rozsah zalednění v daný rok.

Abstract:

In this bachelor’s thesis I deal with the polar bear (Ursus maritimus Phipps 1774), one of the greatest contemporary carnivores (Carnivora). The first research part is devoted to polar bears in general, their reproduction, breeding in the Brno Zoo, the whole Czech Republic and throughout Europe, and to the problems associated with breeding. The second practical part is focused on the ethological analysis of individual elements of female behaviour and their quantitative changes postpartum and during the natural rearing of cubs in the Brno Zoo. The aim of this thesis was to analyze the CCTV footage from the birthing box, to determine repeating activities in mother's behaviour, their length and development during the day. Based on this information to identify behavioural development of the polar bear, to describe changes in individual activities and document the circadian rhythm of the female. The thesis provides an analysis of 312 hours of the footage from the birthing box during the first month of the cubs' life. The results show that the female slept most of the time (on average 86.3% of the time), and allogrooming made the largest part of its activity (on average 10.8% of the time). With growing of the cubs was extended the period when the female was active, dealing especially with allogrooming and autogrooming. Generally, the female was most active in the last third of the day (after sunset). The female was also responsive to noise. The mortality of cubs in captivity is comparable to the estimated mortality in the wild. It differs, however, in individual populations of bears. The range of glaciation in a given year also has a big impact on it.
