Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá současnými problémy vzdělávání amerických Indiánů ve Spojených státech. Stručně nastiňuje, jak se v průběhu historie přístup ke vzdělávání Indiánů měnil a vyvíjel a jak vypadá současná situace. Hlavní část práce se zaměřuje na obtíže, kterým děti amerických Indiánů ve školním prostředí čelí, a to především na negativní přístup učitelů a nevhodné školní osnovy, které jsou zcela odtrženy od jejich životní reality. Pro ilustraci častých zdrojů konfliktu, ke kterým ve škole dochází, jsou v práci uvedeny některé z mnoha rozdílů mezi hodnotami Indiánů a euroamerickým pohledem na svět. Práce dále na základě diskutovaných nedostatků vzdělávacího systému nastiňuje potenciální změny, které by mohly stávající situaci zlepšit. Navrhuje řešení v podobě častější aplikace principů bilingvismu a bikulturalismu v praxi a vysvětluje, proč a jakým způsobem by inovace tohoto typu mohly být prospěšné. Poslední část práce využívá příkladu školy Rough Rock Demonstration School, první vzdělávací instituce řízené výlučně americkými Indiány, k prezentaci úspěchů i nezdarů, které mohou snahy o zavedení některých z navrhovaných inovací do praxe provázet.

Abstract:

This bachelor’s thesis discusses current problems related to the education of Native American children in the U.S. It briefly shows how the approach to Native American schooling has changed and developed throughout history and what the situation is like in the present day. The main body of the thesis focuses on the obstacles Native American children encounter in the classroom, namely the negative attitude of their teachers and a curriculum completely irrelevant to their lives. Some of the differences between Native American and Euro-American worldviews are presented to demonstrate the frequent sources of conflict occurring in the classroom. The thesis further uses the discussed deficiencies of the educational system to suggest potential changes which might lead to improvement. It argues that the principles of bilingualism and biculturalism should be more frequently applied in practice and explains why and in what way would such innovations be beneficial. The very last sections of the thesis uses the example Rough Rock Demonstration School, the first school directed exclusively by Native Americans, to present both the achievements and the failures that might accompany the attempts to incorporate some of the suggested innovations into practice.
