Health-related behavior in early adolescence

Abstract:

The presented study examines the health-related behavior of subjects in early adolescence. The aim of this study was to map behaviors related to health and selected aspects supposedly related to this behavior, in particular social support. It also focused on examining the differences between groups of respondents. In the theoretical part, early adolescence developmental period (11 – 15 years) was discussed using biological, social and health-related point of view. Health and its determinants were also considered, as well as health-related behavior and its association with selected age periods. Healthy lifestyle and the influence of social support was also included. 192 respondents were examined with the extensive test battery. Following methods were used for this study: Health Behaviors Scale (Dosedlová et al., 2013), Health Complaints Scale (modified version Osecká et al., 1998) and Scale of Social Support (Cefai, Camilleri, 2009). Factor analysis was used and 8 factors extracted – active health protection, avoiding junk food, emphasis on natural substances, regularity of lifestyle, mental health protection, the emphasis on fitness, protection from sunlight and indifferent approach to health. Gender difference was also found between subjectively perceived level of health complaints, biggest difference in headaches, back pain and overall nervousness with higher scoring girls. Respondents living in village subjectively perceived higher level of social support in comparison to big city residents. Age difference between subjectively perceived social support in age groups of 11 to 12-year-old children and 14 to 15-year-olds with higher level of sibling social support and lowering influence of parents in higher age. Finally, negative correlation was found between subjectively perceived level of social support and health complaints, meaning that with increasing subjectively perceived level of social support, the level of health complaints decreases.

Abstract:

Predkladaná práca skúma správanie v súvislosti so zdravím jedincov vo vývojom období ranej adolescencie. Cieľom tohto projektu bolo zmapovanie správania súvisiaceho so zdravím a vybrané aspekty s predpokladaným vplyvom na toto správanie, najmä sociálnej opory. Tiež sa zameriavala na preskúmanie rozdielov medzi vybranými skupinami respondentov. V teoretickej časti sme priblížili jednak vybrané vývojové obdobie ranej adolescencie (11 – 15 rokov) po stránke biologickej, sociálnej aj vzťahu ku zdraviu, ďalej sme sa venovali zdraviu a jeho determinantom, následne sme priblížili správanie súvisiace so zdravím v súvislosti so skúmaným vekovým obdobím, definovali zdravý životný štýl a vplyv sociálnej opory naň. 192 respondentom sme administrovali rozsiahlu testovú batériu, z ktorej boli na účely tejto štúdie využité Škála chování souvisejícího se zdravím (Dosedlová et al., 2013), Škála subjektivních zdravotních stesků (upravená verzia Osecká et al., 1998) a Škála sociální opory (Cefai, Camilleri, 2009). Faktorovou analýzou sme vyčlenili 8 faktorov opisujúcich správanie súvisiace so zdravím - aktívna ochrana zdravia, vyhýbanie sa nezdravým potravinám, dôraz na prírodné látky, pravidelnosť režimu, ochrana psychického zdravia, dôraz na kondíciu, ochrana pred slnečným žiarením a nezaujatý prístup ku zdraviu. Zistili sme tiež genderový rozdiel medzi subjektívne vnímanou mierou zdravotných ťažkostí, kde najväčšie rozdiely boli v súvislosti s bolesťou hlavy, chrbta a celkovou nervozitou a nepokojom a vyššie v nich skórovali dievčatá. Taktiež sme zistili, že vyššiu subjektívne vnímanú mieru sociálnej opory vnímajú jedinci žijúci na dedine v porovnaní s obyvateľmi veľkého mesta, pričom bol tiež preukázaný rozdiel medzi vekovými skupinami 11 – 12 rokov a 14 – 15 rokov v subjektívne vnímanej miere sociálnej opory vzhľadom ku rodičom a súrodencom, kde bola vnímaná opora v rodičoch vo vyššom veku nižšia a naopak, v súrodencoch vyšším vekom vyššia. Nakoniec sme dokázali negatívny vzťah medzi subjektívne vnímanou mierou sociálnej opory a zdravotných ťažkostí, čiže so zvyšujúcou sa subjektívne vnímanou mierou sociálnej opory klesá subjektívne vnímaná miera zdravotných ťažkostí.
