Monopolies – a problem or benefit for the economy?

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá vývojem teorie monopolu a pokládá si za cíl odpovědět, jedná-li se o tržní strukturu představující problém či přínos pro ekonomiku. První kapitoly se věnují vývoji neoklasické ekonomické teorie, která přišla s modelem dokonalé konkurence a „odsouzením“ nedokonale konkurenční tržní strukturu monopolu. Obsahem dalších kapitol je postupný vývoj v myšlení ve formě poukazování na odlišnosti teorie a ekonomické reality. Poslední kapitoly jsou věnovány rakouské škole, která přichází s naprosto novým náhledem na chod hospodářství současně se specifickým chápáním monopolu.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with a development of the theory of monopoly and is trying to answer if monopoly as a market structure represents a problem or benefit for the economy. First chapters deal with a development of neoclassical economic theory which have brought up a model of perfect competition and “reprobated” imperfect competition market structure of monopoly. The content of the next chapters is about progressive development of thoughts in the form of pointing out the differences between theory and economic reality. Last chapters analyze the thoughts of the Austrian School. This school came up with the whole new insights into economy as well as with the specific comprehension of monopoly.
