Pronunciation errors in EFL students caused by mother tongue interference

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce zkoumá výslovnostní chyby žáků v angličtině pod vlivem jejich mateřského jazyka, což je v případě této práce český jazyk. Teoretická část nejprve definuje potřebnou terminologii, kterou je funkce artikulátorů, členění anglického fonetického systému s rozdělením na samohlásky a souhlásky a zásadní rozdíly v porovnání s českým. Zvláštní pozornost věnuje dentálním frikativám pro jejich klíčovou pozici v praktické části. Následně teoretická část popisuje některou z dostupné literatury pro zlepšení a učení anglické výslovnosti u nerodilých mluvčích. Věnuje se také metodám, které lze využít při výuce dentálních frikativ. Praktická část využívá kvalitativního výzkumu, během kterého byla analyzována výslovnost dentálních frikativ žáků 9. třídy Základní školy Dolní Bečva. Výzkum započal rozhovorem s respondenty, který blíže přiblížil jejich vztah k anglickému jazyku. Následně respondenti četli později analyzovaný text, dohromady dvakrát pro možnost pozdější komparace. Mezi prvním a druhým čtením byli respondenti seznámeni se správnou výslovností dentálních frikativ pomocí výslovnostních cvičení, která jsou popsána v separátní kapitole. Výsledky analýzy výslovnosti jsou prezentovány v kapitolách zaměřených zvlášť na první a zvlášť na druhé čtení textu. Pro přesnější analýzu výslovnosti jsou analyzovaná slova rozdělena dle pozice dentální frikativy ve slově.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis investigates the pronunciation errors of English learners influenced by their mother tongue, which is in this case the Czech language. The theoretical part firstly describes the necessary terminology, which is the function of articulators, the description of the English phonetic system with the division into vowels and consonants, and the major differences compared to the Czech one. It pays more attention to dental fricatives because of their key position in the practical part. Subsequently, the theoretical part describes some of the literature available for improving and learning English pronunciation. It concentrates also on the methods which can be used while teaching dental fricatives. The practical part used qualitative research during which the pronunciation of dental fricatives of 9th grade students of the Primary school Dolní Bečva was analysed. The research began by interviewing the respondents which lead to introducing their relationship with English language. Subsequently, the respondents read the later analysed text, twice in total for later comparison. Between the first and second reading, respondents were familiarized with the correct pronunciation of dental fricatives through pronunciation exercises which are described in a separate chapter. The results of the pronunciation analysis are presented in chapters focusing separately on the first and second readings of the text. For a more accurate pronunciation analysis, the analysed words are divided according to the position of the dental fricative in the word.
