Translation Thesis

Abstract:

The subject of my thesis is the translation from English into Czech language. For my work, I have chosen English book „The Joy of Surrender unto Him!“ written by Veronica Williams and I translated this book not only to present the differences between two languages, English and Czech but mainly because I personally know the author and I wanted people to get to know her wonderful journey of faith. The aim of my work is to present practical and theoretical aspects of translation. During my work I used few resources: „Introducing Translation Studies“ (Jeremy Munday, London, 2002), „Literary Translation and Communication (Milan Hrdlička, Praha, 2003) and „Theory of Translation“ (Dagmar Knittlová, Olomouc, 2000). Munday’s book is dealing with translation problems more on the linguistic level while books by Hrdlička and Knittlová concentrate on the ways of approaching a concrete piece of translation from the practical point of view. The translator’s correct or incorrect interpretation of the original text certainly has a great impact on the quality of the translation and on the reader’s perception of the text that is why in the theoretical part I focus on the translator’s role and different levels of translating.
